There's quite a bit of space there. A few full hookups exist for the
"handicap" area. Otherwise, it'll be the honey wagon drive-by leeching
routine.
From what I understand we'll be on one building which is north of the
grandstand and just west of the winding lake/path among the trees. Check the
view from Google Maps.
Bring a mode of transportation on the grounds or prepare to rent something
if you're opposed to walking off your dinner, ice cream and donuts that way
God intended.
The grounds was a reclaimed strip mine from back in the 1930's or so. It was
owned, opened and privately run by the Hayes family for many years. The
gentleman was very civic-minded. He also owned the local Coca Cola bottling
franchise for quite a while and had a stable racing standard bred in the
region (sulky). He also loved entertainment. Hayes stood in contrast to the
Berger gang that operated in the area during the 1930's.
You're correct, Dan, the place is used a lot -- something going on nearly
every weekend during the warm months.

The Illinois State Fairground website says DuQuoin fairgrounds has:
"Over 1,000 hookups
with water and electric.
DuQuoin City Water Dept.
Electrical hookup three wire grounded - 30 amps.
2 bath houses with toilets and showers
Dump station"
$15 per nite fair or non fair - goes up to $20 after July 1st.
There must be many low cost place like this if you want more than WallyWorld but don't needed a heated pool.

I made a Google map of the area we will be using at DuQuoin for the fall
convention. It is 1400 feet from the Expo Hall to the main campground which
has no full hookups. There are several other areas that have full hookups
away from the main campground that are identified on the map. The 1000
sites they talk about on the web are scattered over the whole campus, which,
as Dan pointed out, is huge. This is a beautiful campus with lots of
history, and scenic streets to ride bikes and go for hikes. The campground
is right on the lake and is very level and nice. Across the lake, I think,
is a golf course. Lots of nicely kept grass anyway{:>) See the map at

Thanks for the map. This helps us all understand the lay of the land.
I had never heard about a golf course being there. The place fills for car
races, etc.
Years ago they had water ski competition on the lake inside the infield of

Well, What about an answer to my question? If you checked it out for me, it will save me a 311 mile (one way) $100 site survey trip.
I do not have one of those rubber band powered wind up cars to make the trip in.

Great for some form of pool, I'm sure.
The old man didn't like golf, just horse racing and carnival rides -- and
riding on the tractor mowing grass to get away from other stuff. When you
ride a tractor all day you have ample time to think and solve the world's
problem. Then you get home.

I need a site survey of the meeting and all parking areas where GMCs will be located. I also need some idea on what it will take to get coverage to those areas from the main Internet access location where ever that is. I usually try to stay under 15 feet on the poles but could go higher if necessary. Also on buildings I usually use magnetic mounts if there are steel buildings that can be used. I have no problems going up on roofs for repeaters if necessary. I would like to keep transport (point to point) links under 1300 feet if possible.
I also need to know what kind of FREE access is available for us to latch on to. If none is available we may have to order in a DSL line for the rally. If a DSL (or better yet, cable) is necessary, I need to know where that link will terminate in relationship to the coverage areas. I have no problems running 300 feet or so of phone line or Ethernet Cat 5 if absolutely necessary.
Lastly, please check for main and adjacent channels for interference. I usually try to stay on 1, 6, and 11, but I will use other channels if absolutely necessary. I need two clear non-interfering channels.
Please get to me ASAP when you get the info in case I need to order anything. August may be a little late as the lead time for some Telcos can be very long sometimes. I had a major problem down there years ago with the State Government of Illinois in Pickneyville which is an adjacent exchange. Both of these exchanges are serviced by Verizon. So please give me the info as soon as you get it.
We have not had to order in a circuit for a GMCMI rally since Berrien Springs but who knows what we will need until we have checked it out.

Byron, when you go, perhaps you should talk to Royce Jackson or Norm Hill
about what they have vs. what they are going to do for us. It is in the
contract that they will provide at least one free access point for us in
which case Ken would have to broadcast from that access point. However,
there was talk that they hoped to have full coverage of the grounds by the
time of our convention....doubt that will happen.
It never ceases to amaze me at how an original subject such as "geocaching"
can morph to "internet access" on this forum without the subject line
changing. I'm sure I miss a lot of posts of interest because they have
nothing to do with what the subject line says{:>(

other things. At that time, I will talk to our contacts there about what
their internet access plans are for our convention. If they have just one
access point available, I can put that location on the map
http://tiny.cc/GMCMI_DuQuoin_Rally_Map and look for a way (sans trees, etc.)
to get it to the campground, hopefully across the lake with no obstacles in
the way. When there, I could give you a call and look for whatever answers
you need at that time. If you need any equipment procured specifically for
our needs, I hope you let us know. I'll bet we could find a way to pay you
for them{:>)
