G’day,
To smooth out the Onan in Double Trouble I want to have the cooling fan
balanced. I would guess that it would have been balanced as a stand alone
assembly and not connected to the crankshaft.
Whaaadaaaayaaaa think?

Rob,
Look for small, clip on weights on the vanes. That's how those types
of rotating assys were balanced. Unless you know if the Onan is
internally or externally balanced, I wouldn't fool with it.

Steve,
I don't remember seeing any clip on weights on the fan when John Sharpe and
I installed the Pertronix, maybe that's the problem!

Rob, unless something bad happened to your fan, I'm thinking at 1,800 rpm there is not a lot to be gained there. Pulleys/fans on cars at 3x the speed typically are net built and not balanced. My vote would be to invest that time and energy in a 6 pack of Foster's.

Craig et al,
The first Pertronix unit John Sharpe and I installed on Double Trouble we
set as per the instructions (0.030 from the magnet). It got clobbered by the
fins of the cooling fan. I SWEAR that I turned the fan over and checked the
clearance between the pickup and each blade one by one before we started it.
It ran fine but hiccupped when I switched the circuit breaker on the Onan
on. When it hiccupped something must have shifted as that's when the pickup
got smacked. When we installed the second Pertronix we set the clearance to
the magnet at 0.060 and it worked fine. As a precaution I did the fan blade
clearance check again and noticed a few of the fan fins were closer than the
others so I used a flap wheel to take a bit off them. Being the anally
retentive perfectionist that I am I wanted to have it re-balanced.
NOBODY in Australia drinks Fosters! It's exported. Here's a link to their

When I mounted my magnet I made it flush with the edge of the fin of the flywheel. Then I checked that the flywheel cleared the pickup on all of the fins all the way around.
On Dan's we mounted the magnet in the fin but it stuck up slightly higher than the edge of the fin. This made it higher than any of the other fins all the way around and eliminates any potential problem with higher fins.

I agree Fosters is not worth opening, but Victoria Bitter is a different story. Wish we could get it here to drink under the shade of the GMC awning. (Note this is GMC related)
