Hey everyone,

Next issue, well today I started the ol groutch up to let her run for
awhile. Well she died in the middle of the run. no sputter no nothin just
died. No she will crank over but not start. I have fuel in both my rear and
front fuel filter but no fuel at the carb. Any ideas of where it could be
stuck or what is going on. I am learnin here so any help would be
appreciated. Thanks all.

Steve,

I have both!! I am not getting any fuel to the carb. Disconnected the fuel
line at the carb, cranked, nothing. Should I replace the electric? I can
hear the electric pump doin something. replace it still? If the electric
pump is working but the mechanical failed would the fuel make it through the
non functioning mechanical pump?
THANKS STEVE.

John

Be careful. If the mechanical fuel pump failed due to a cracked diaphram the electric fuel pump could be pumping gasoline into the engine crankcase.

Check your oil level. If it is overfull then it could be gasoline. DO NOT run it if that is tha case until you have replaced the mechanical pujp and drained and changed the oil.

The oil looks ok not overfilled. Is there a way to check the electric fuel
pump and if it is working? And the mechanical is not should the engine still
run?

John,
Turn it on and listen. They all make a certain level of noise. I
gave up pumping through a mechanical years ago. Now I only have an
electric (Carter 4070 and have a block off plate where the mechanical
one was.
Getting back to the pump, like Emory says, if you can hear the
electric running, and no fuel is getting to the carb, several things
could be happening. You could be out of gas (regardless of what the
gauges indicate), the diaphragm in the mechanical could be breeched
and you're pumping directly into the oil pan. There may be a blockage
in the mechanical you can't pump past and lastly, by some coincidence,
the mechanical and electrical could both be dead. Check your fuses
first though.

Do you have an in-line fuel filter back near the tanks but after the tank selector valve? The ethanol in the gas may have loosened some varnish in the tanks and plugged your filter up tight!

How old are your fuel lines? If they are more than a few years old our new gasoline might just have eaten them away to the point that your sucking air.

A quick check might be to connect the electric fuel pump inlet to a gas can to see if you get gas to the carb.

Good luck,
