Are there any steps out there other than the Ragusa
which would apparently be constructed of unobtanium?

There is/was an elctrically operated step that was more trouble than it
was worth-In my opinion.

The Ragusa step provided us great service for over 15 years. It is
simple, rugged and when polished looks great. And there is on on ebay as
we speak getting lots of action; currently at $100.

My Ragusa step feels as solid as can be. It's so dead simple there is nothing to go wrong with it.

Mac,

Before buying the GMC I had VERY limited experience driving large vehicles.
I drove the odd Uhaul truck now and then to move but that was it.

Double Trouble had a manual slide in/out entry step that stowed completely
under the side of the coach and did not stick out at all. It was kinda ugly
so I decided to install a Ragusa step.

It lasted for about two weeks; I tore it off pulling into a campsite that
had railroad ties on the sides of the road. It was late at night and I
didn't see them as I went around a right hand curve. I heard a crunch but
didn't know what it was. When we got to the office; opened the door and went
to use the step it was gone!

At any rate I put the original slide out step back on and that's that!

I also tore off the gages I had fitted to the tire valve stems when I hit a
curb.

When I drove The Blue Streak back to Sydney from the countryside where I
bought it I tore the plastic caps off the wheels when I kissed a guard rail
pulling off the freeway.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you do get a Ragusa step you need to be
careful not to tear it off if you're not used to driving a wide vehicle.

Thanks for all the replies.

Yes, Emery, I was wondering about the price. I have been
watching the one on eBay for a day or two. I'll admit that
I wanted to find out what the new price for one would be.

With the current status of Money Pit, I guess I should be
more interested in getting the coach clean and roadworthy!

And I definitely can relate to Rob's experience in tearing
one off! Twice I have forgotten to put up the folding
steps on my travel trailer before setting out from the road
in front of our house and had the large brick structure
housing our mailbox prove to be stronger than the folding
steps! By now I know how to change the steps!

I think I'll probably pass for now on a Ragusa step, but
I'll continue to watch the auction progress and see how it
plays out in the next 25 hours.

Thanks again to all who replied.

Mac,
I had a friend that broke his Ragusa step off but he still had some pieces.
He sent the pieces to Ragusa and they sent him a new step. Not sure if they
still do this as it has been about 5 yeas ago that they replaced his.

I have been looking at making an automatic close / fold up mechanism for my Ragusa step. After looking a several options I think I will use a vacuum diaphragm off of a 4 wheel drive Blazer. The item is located under the battery box on a Blazer and pulls a long cable to engage the front axle. I would have gotten one last week when I was in a junk yard in Cincinnati but I have not figured out how to disconnect the axle end of the cable yet.

My thought is to connect it to engine vacuum so it automatically closes when the engine is running. I may spring load it to open when the engine is shut off. I may also stick a restrictor in the line to delay it's opening and closing.

One other thing I do not like on the Ragusa step is the way it is mounted. Two of the bolts are in the frame and two bolts are in the body. The body moves in relationship to the frame as the coach goes down the road. I looked at the mounting and determined that all of the weight applied to the step is applied to the two body bolts so I shock mounted the two bolts mounting the step to the frame. I also cut two rubber strips and stuck them between the step and the body. I feel this will allow some movement while going down the road and still not affect the integrity of the step when someone is standing on it.

Apparently it was. I had a noisy party on board and they were watching
out the back window. I heard someone "Wow-Cool!" I said what's cool? They
replied "How expertly you are clipping those cones"
I didn't realize it as I was concentrating on merging traffic. I stopped
at the 1st opportunity to fold up the step before I hit something solid.
I have to smile when I think of that scene.

All I know is I had a step on my old SOB ( my old SOB was 17 years new than my GMC) The step it had was horrible and I don't remember it being cheaper than the Ragusa!

The other step was flimsy, folded poorly, and was very disappointing. Of course you needed the step in the SOB as it was the first 2 steps out of 4 to get in the thing.

The Ragusa is worth the price. Solid and simple.

After learning the price of the Ragusa and reading of
its drawbacks, I believe that I will just rely on one
of those $10 folding plastic steps!

Thanks to all for the info.

Jim, I have decided that I can leave a lot of
$10 steps for the price of one Ragusa!

Cheers - Mac
