Well, I got Money Pit home a couple of weeks ago with
known poor brakes. After I arranged a storage location
about 1.5 miles from the house, I started her up and
after about a hundred yards or less, the red brake
warning light came on and pedal went almost to the floor
when I applied the brakes. Still had SOME braking, but
a bit scary. hen the red light went out and brakes worked
about as well as they ever had (pretty poor) until I got
almost to the storage lot and the warning conditions again
appeared. Got the coach safely parked and went home again
after I started to breathe normally again.
I've been back and checked the master cylinder and it is
virtually full. I stronly suspect that there must be
air in the lines, but the brakes were supposedly bled
before I started my trip home to Oklahoma City from Texas.
I have no facilities or location to work on the coach
(gravel in storage lot) and haven't checked to see if
local Chevy/GMC car and truck dealer can or will work
on the brakes.
I'm many decades past the time when I did virtually all
my own vehicle repairs and will gratefully appreciate any
and all suggestions.

The symptoms you describe could well be that you are leaking between
the front and rear chambers of the master cylinder.
I would guess that replacement of your master cylinder will solve your
problem.

Here was a recent post that might help
Hi Ron--a few thoughts. The unit we installed in Dan's coach was a Fenco
M1730 from Autozone. Although his brakes seem to work great, they also
worked great (before failure) with whatever was on there before. Dan may
want to pipe in whether they are as good now as originally. One issue with
recommending this for you is that you have 80mm front calipers which could
result in a volume problem for this M/C. But as you say for $16 (including
tax) it may be worth a try. Another thing to watch is the bleeding of the
unit. Dan, Jeff and I were surprised how much you have to bleed the M/C
itself. We had to do it on the coach which was fine, but it took a lot of
recirculating pushes of the pedal before we hooked up the lines. I have a
suspicion that some folks may have issues just because of inadequate
bleeding of the M/C itself.

You should bench bleed it first. Grip it in a vice and fill it with
fluid. I usually comes with two plastic fittings and little plastic
tubes. Push in on the piston with a screwdriver or other rod and have
the two tubes fastened down so that they eject back into the top of
the master cylinders. Push the piston in and it will return out by
the spring inside. Do this until you get no more bubbles. Then use a
small ball peen hammer and tap the side of the cylinder while pushing
some more. You usually get a few more bubbles out that way.
Then install it.
