So I just installed a secondary evaporator under the couch and had an AC shop run new lines to it. The system was closed but had a leak, which they fixed.

I'd like to change and or check the compressor oil, but it seems like that requires removing the compressor??

Or is it safe to say that since the system was pretty much sealed the oil level should be OK??

I'm going to use Duracool, BTW.

The Harrison compressor has a sump so you're probably ok.

You can probably get by without adding any oil as long as you did not
have a large leak that would entrain oil with the refrigerant that was
being blown out through the leak. To be safe though with the addition
of an additional evaporator you might just want to add 1 or 2 oz. of
oil by just pouring it into the new evaporator before connecting in in
place. Any oil that you add there will eventually be picked up by the
refrigerant and dispersed through the system to the compressor.

Greetings,

Name here is Tom and I have been lurking in the background for about a year
as a wannabee. September 15, 2009, I became a newbie. Hold your applause -
thank you!

I am fortunate as to have purchased a '73 Glacier from Dennis Sexton - after
some discussion WE decided that he had too many GMC's and offered the
Glacier to me.

Just thought I would jump in on the freon chat. I was at Carlisle yesterday
and there
was a vendor there selling "Enviro-Safe". He goes by the name of "The
Freon Don".
I asked him about Duracool and he said that his company makes Duracool and
Enviro-Safe
and that they are the same product.
Cost was about $8 per can

His fact sheet states:

Non-toxic
Hydrocarbon refrigerant
Green Peace approved
Does not require a compressor oil change
Made in USA
When using in an R-12 vehicle - 134 fittings must be installed
Stop leak available
6oz can is equal to 1lb. of 134 or 18oz of R-12
Comes with a green dye

I have no association with The Don or his company, just passing this on. He
does not have a web site, but I will forward a phone number if anyone is
interested. Send a PM to

gmcrv1 AT gmail DOT com

Hope this wasn't a repeat.

Thanks,

Tom Eckert

Carlisle PA.

Sorry, no web site, but I will forward a phone number if requested - not
sure
of the protocol for posting phone numbers here.

I'm currently in NJ - heading back to the Memphis, TN area next week.

Auburn is a bit far and the interior is apart thanks to all the stuff I have
learned over
the past year reading the mail here.

No, that's just the page for the Carlisle Auto flea market - 7,000+ vendor

Thanks Gene,

Good to be here - especially once the coach is on the road. I followed Dan
& Teri's
Quartzsite saga with great interest - and immediately printed out the Black
List (which I am on) and made a backup copy!

Yes, Enviro-Safe is another brand of Hydrocarbon refrigerant. HC-12a
and Duracool are other brands.
I don't think the vendor was telling the truth in saying that his
company makes Duracool and Enviro-Safe. He is a vendor, not the
manufacturer.

By the way, you can get Enviro-Safe on eBay for $5.00 a can.

Emery,

I agree - I think he was fibbing. I have been a vendor at Carlisle since
day one - 1972 - both spring and fall and our spaces are very close to where
he is. He said he has been there selling this type of stuff since 1993. I
don't think so. I asked the other five guys in our group and they can't
remember him either. Although, we are getting older...one of the guys is
88! CRS?

So, is Duracool and Enviro-Cool the same stuff?

In all likelyhood they are similar if not identical. HC12a and
Duracool are ones that I am more familar with and they are essentially
identical. They are a mixture of purified propane and a small amount
of isobutane.

If you add 2 oz it won,t damage anything. May be a little over or under but will work ok. I looked in my 94 Suburban shop manual and it states add 3 oz when REPLACING EVAP.

PEG oil is fine if the system has R1234a in it. BUT, if it had Freon
R12 in it then that ester oil (synthetic oil) is NOT compatible with
the R12a or the mineral oil in the compressor.
The auto parts shops sell mineral oil for compressors with R12 and an
ester oil for use with R134a.

OK so it had R12 in it, and with the 2nd evap I suppose I should add a couple of OZ mineral oil to the system since there is so much more wetted surface.

I think I'll just pour it into the new hose since it's easy to get to.

Now I can't wait for a hot day to try it out!
