I just turned over another rock in my recent acquisition and found that the water heater tank is rusted through. I'm hoping not to find many more boulders. I like to dry camp and liked Ray Erspamer's tankless water heater installation. It seems like a better alternative than replacing the existing tank. You don't have to run the generator to get hot water. Are there any updates and/or advice on this?
Thanks,

Dan has a nice installation here too.....Once you go tankless, you'll never go back to a standard water heater !
Have a great day !!!

Glenn, here is a link to it. It vents out the Fantastic Vent, 3 inches away, with fan reversed.

Your next project could be to connect it to your hot water line then you'd
have hot water everywhere.
One caution, be careful of CO in a closed bathroom.

I like the original style hot water tank for the "free" hot water it
provides while driving. I also like the idea of having propane water heating
as an option to avoid running the genset when you are parked for extended
periods.
The tankless water heaters are great in that you don't have to wait, and
I've read comments indicating that they use less propane than the tri-mode
tanks.
I need to replace my original water heater, so I am considering plumbing
both an electric tank and a tankless heater together so that no matter what,
I always have a supply of hot water.
If I feed the tankless heater from the electric tank, will the tankless
heater remain off if the incoming water is hot enough? Will feeding 180°F
water into the tankless unit have any negative longterm effect on it?
Does anyone see any pros or cons to doing this over installing a tri-mode
unit? I have not checked what the tri-mode tank costs, but going with an
electric tank and a tankless heater will cost me +/-$500 .

I don't see any benefits of a dual system over just a tankless heater, I do see 2 negatives:
1. A cost of over $500 for a dual system vs. a tankless for under $200.
2. The space needed for the 2nd electric heater
Considering how little propane a tankless heater uses, I think it would take many years to use $300 worth of propane before the dual system actually became cost effective.
Have a great day !!!
