G’day,
Helen would like to have a Microwave Convection Grill Oven (MCGO) in our
GMC’s. She likes the 4 burner cooktop in the Avions so I intend to cut the
oven off and fit the MCGO under it. I already found one for The Blue Streak
here in Australia.
Below I have listed links for reasonably priced units in the USA.
I would appreciate it if have any of these units to let me know what you
think about it; where you bought it, and the cost.

http://www.sharpusa.com/ForHome/HomeAppliances/MicrowaveOvens/R820JS.aspx
http://us.sanyo.com/Microwaves/Microwave-Oven-with-Convection-and-Grill
All the above units are $250 or less; if you have one that did not exceed
that price that you are happy with please let me know the maker, model,
where you bought it, and the cost.
Thanks,

We recently installed the Sears one that you that you have listed.
HOWEVER, it doesn't have a GRILL function. I don't know about the
others that you have listed but most do not have a grill heating coil
in them.
One thing that we liked about the Sears one is that it is 1.5 cu ft
and it will microwave and convection cook at the same time. This
makes for faster cooking on things such as meat.
Not all of the ones that you have listed have a grill function, and
not all of them will microwave and convection cook at the same time.
I see that the Sanyo has a grill function but it is only 1 cu. ft.
whereas the Sears is 1.5 cu ft. Also the Sanyo will grill and convect
at the same time but it will not microwave and convect at the same time.
So, one should look them over carefully and check to see that the
features you want are there before you buy.

Rob, I have a very close model to the Sharp you have listed. Got it at
Walmart. We've had no trouble with it. Seems to do a pretty good job on
baking. We've done cakes, pies and other stuff with it. I did add a blower
behind it as it is under the counter and I wanted to evacuate the heat. But
not much heat comes out so I think it would be OK without the blower.
Thanks,

Emery,
This is exactly the kind of info I am looking for. The ads for the various
units are not 100% clear. Thanks to your info I only have four to research!
I'm trying to figure out which one to buy so I can get it on order and
delivered before I leave Australia.
I will be driving Double Trouble from Houston over to the COOP where I'll
have a month to work on it before Helen arrives. Hopefully I can get all the
stuff done I want so when she does arrive we can head south for the Keys.
Last year she had to wait for a week while I finished up some projects and
she was NOT a happy camper! I don't blame her either!

Rob,
We have had the Sharp 820 for a number of years and it is a great unit
and it work well in all modes of operation. The last one that you
just found from walmart the GE half time is also a good unit as that
is what Dale Frahm has in his coach. We will probably go the the
sharp 820 when we do the remodel.

Rob,
I mounted a Sharp r820bk under the 4 burner stove top like you intend
to do and then realized that the digital display is not readable from
above straight on. Since then I have relocated the unit above the
refer in my Royale. This works well to read the display and in
addition it now shares the rooftop exhaust vent with the refer. So
just check the readability of the display of the model you select.

Nelson,
Thanks! Nothing's bloody simple!
No room above the fridge, PO installed a two door two way Dometic that Jim B
got working perfectly when I was there in 2008.
In the Avions the oven / cooktop is located directly across from the entry
door. I just read your email to "da boss" and noted that we would have to
back up and bend over to read the display or bend over sideways. She
quipped; "or stand outside." ;-)
Well that's sorted!

Tony,
The Avion OEM combination LPG oven / cooktop has a vent built into the rear
of the cooktop that vents heat from the oven into the coach. Directly above
the cooktop there is the exhaust fan to take it outside from there.
A picture is worth a thousand words so:

I have considered a convection microwave, but I was concerned about venting
it. How do you plan to do that under the stove top?

I agree. I mounted our Sharp under the counter. That's a great location for
preschoolers and midgets. However, the exercise of bending over isn't so
bad.
I have a Royale and considered mounting it over the refrigerator. My wife
didn't like that idea because it puts it a bit too high for her.
An ideal location would be over the stove but that doesn't work for a gas
stove. Since there's not a lot of counter space it has to go somewhere that
a cabinet is. Again, my wife would rather the cabinets be handy (that we're
always in and out of) rather than the microwave, which we don't always use.
I've seen more Sharps than any other brand. It works well. The convection
part browns well. Is that the "grilling" function? Don't know. Probably is.
To cover up the cavity of the old oven, I painted some strips of FRB black,
drilled holes for what would go across the top, and used those strips on top
and two sides. I put a shelf in for it to sit on and had some shelf space
underneath.
The one thing I don't like is the clock. Since we're always on and off AC
power, the clock always gets reset. I wish there were a way to disable it
because I hate looking like a 12 c'clock flasher.

Agreed. There is a lot of space behind the microwave that opens into lots of
space for breathing room, as much as a microwave mounted in a house that
only vents back into the kitchen. This is why I have holes in a strip across
the top of our microwave.
I don't have a good photo except one with a long URL.

Go get your own tiny one. Just put these lines together in your browser and
it works. Scroll down once you're there.

Rob,
Wife did not like having to get down on hands and knees to work with
oven under the stove. We put our above the counter with a built in
vent fan assy. Will be doing the same layout in the Avion with the
cooktop that you got for us. Took the cabinet door from the top and
used it to create new storage under the cooktop. A lot of people that
we talk to at rallies said that they would have put their microwave up
if they did it again. A lot of woman say they like the 4 burner
cooktop but when it comes down to really using the cooktop we have
found that the 2 burner is more than sufficient for preparing a meal.
You just don't use 4 burners at one time. What you really need is
storage space.
