For all you California people out there, can you provide a little information of tags. My understanding is that the tags on a vehicle stay with the vehicle vs NY which requires new tags with a change in ownership. Yes/no? Just trying to figure out if we can use the tags on the coach we bought in Calif to get it home. How does it work on the left coast?

Thanks

With the exception of personalized, Ham Radio and Press Photographer
(and few other more
esoteric ones), license plates are that are issued and installed on a
vehicle remain with the
vehicle until it is crushed or the plates are rendered unreadable, at
which point they have to
be replaced.

You will be fine to drive it with the plates that are on it.

Wayne,
you received an answer that is correct. A litle more elaboration: If the registration is current, no problem just get the signed title, current registration and I suggest a bill of sale. The form is available on the CA DMV web site. No notary is required. (I think the registration is current)
One more little item. If the title is "Ed or Emma" than only her signature is needed If it is "Ed and Emma" than both would be required. But than without a notary requirement who would know? wink wink nudge nudge.
Sold my last coach with CA plates to a Canadian with no problem. He did get the boarder crossing paperwork beforehand
Don't forget to check with your insurance Co.
Here is a web site that has lots of info regarding vehicle laws across the country. www.dmv.org

One more thought. If it fits your schedule, join us at the Western States Rally in Auburn Ca May 19-24 in Auburn, CA along I-80 so not too much out of your way. A great way to meet other owners, have fun and pick up some good technical info.

The name of the game is: you follow the rules of the state where the vehicle was last titled / registered. If the vehicle is legal in California (current registration/ inspection / insurance) Then you are OK to transport it to the new owners location by the most practical direct route.

In most states you travel through, beside meeting the seller's state's registration requirement, you will need a signed bill of sale and proof of insurance.

If you travel without a plate which is the procedure in some states like Michigan, you may get stopped and have to prove the vehicle came from a "no plate required" state. Also without a plate, some states require you to stop at a scale or other location and declare your no plate vehicle. Utah is one of those states.

More than you wanted to know.

California, like other states, also uses 'tags' to indicate
when the current registration expires.

They are color coded so it is easy to spot who has
paid the DMV fees and who has not. 2010 color is yellow.

You could always have the seller (or whoever) take
a photo of the license plate and email it to you.
