Question for the group. 1977 455 engine will not shut down with key. I had ingnition lock removed inspected and installed. Then replaced the rod actuated, column mounted ingition switch with no success. I have MSD ignition. The only way I am able to get the engine to shut down is to pull the battery lead at the distributor. The shop's fix is to install a toggle kill switch until they can figure out why it is backfeeding.

Thanks for your input!

I sounds like somehow you've tapped into the alternator at some point
and as long as it's putting out juice, the engine will keep running.
What is the last thing worked on or touched before this started happening?

Nothing has been worked on in a year or more engine or house electrical. Everything has been working well. I have MSD ignition, Progressice Dynamics Invertor and Yandinda 150 combiner. Engine still runs with all batteries disconected, so Alternator feed is likely.

I also run the MSD sysyem. I would suggest you disconnect the wire from the ign sw to the box while it is running. This should be the smaller of the red wires. If it stays running the MSD box is bad. If it shuts off it is getting a backfeed from the alt like Steve said.

When I had an MSD I had to put a diode in the dash gen light wire. It would draw current from the alt battery and keep the engine running, that was sometime ago. MSD say this in there instructions somewhere, what size and where.
