Has anyone written a play book on the removal of our beloved 6k Onans? Because ours doesn't work, we're tired of paying for the gas to haul it around the country and want to remove it. Or is it self explanatory when you get a good look at it.
Thanking you again,

John, If you take it out, you will have to reset the ride height. That thing is HHHHHHeavy. Probably 400#. If you pull it out using a floor jack, you'll have to figure out how to get it off the jack! Or just push it off. Be sure to take the wires and fuel line loose first. Then I would probably put the jack under it or better yet screw an eye hook into the hole on the intake and pick it up with an engine lift. Unbolt the slides and remove.
How's that EL II coming? See you a Bean Station?

John,
That is exactly how I did it with engine hoist, John Sharpe said it all. Pretty self explanatory once you start.

John,
Have you contacted Tom Hampton of Grandview Motorhomes down in Marysville,

He's only 150 miles from you in Archbold?

If you have some type on lift or hoist it is the best way.
I do not have a hoist but have had good luck using the adjustable suspension. After unhooking wires and lines: 1) Raise that side up. 2) Pull out Onan and put a cart under it. 3) With the coach suspension, lower Onan onto cart and block as needed. 4) Remove bolts in sides starting with the outer ones. You may need to go up down on the coach height to get the stress off the blots before removing them. Cut off valves on the airbags help for fine movements.
Installation, if required, is just reverse.
I would not recommend a jack from underneath... I had one fall off.
But again, a lift or hoist rated for more than 500lbs would be the safest, easiest and quickest way.

Bring it (installed in the coach) to BS and we will fix it. Most often it is just cleaning heads, cleaning and adjusting carb / fuel pump, or spark plugs to get it going. Occasionally I have had to fix a board.
You would be amazed on the number of them that cleaning heads has resolved their poor running issues.
What were you plans for it after you remove it?
If you absolutely plan to pitch it, bring it to BS and I'll bring my pick up instead of my Blazer and I'll haul it out of there for you.
I really would like to fix it for you instead you of removing it. You haven't stated what is wrong with it.

What Eastern States rally are you talking about?
Eastern States is holding a rally?
Where is it?
When is it?
I'm just giving you a hard time.
We will do it. Maybe we will get Colonel Ken involved also. It was Lawrence Gaskins and Colonel Ken who developed and perfected this. I wonder if Lawrence will be there in his french fry powered SOB. He was at the last Eastern States Rally.
Do you have a Dremmel tool?
Do you have a timing light?
We will need to grind a very small slot in the flywheel for the magnet to sit in. It only takes a minute. The magnet will stick in the hole but we need a very small spot of epoxy to assure it never leaves the flywheel.
A piece of double faced foam tape will also help while we are setting the timing where you want it.
I do not know if you realize it, but all of the original Onan ignition stuff stays installed so you could always go back the original ignition by moving two wires if the Pertronix module were to quit. I have never heard of one going bad.
It is a great upgrade.
The install should take us less than an hour.

Ken,
You may have never heard of a Pertronix module going bad but if the guy that
installs it puts it to close to the magnet and the Onan hiccups it will get
smacked and wind up in pieces!
When I installed one in Double Trouble IIRC the spec was 30 thousandths
between the magnet and pickup. I located it on the tight side of that spec
because I figured it would be better.
I turned the flywheel over by hand and noted that some of the fins came
REALLY close so I used a flap wheel to remove a bit off every fin to
increase that distance.
When we fired it up it worked great but the Onan hiccupped for some reason
and when it did that one of the fins or the magnet hit the pickup and
shattered it.
We then mounted a second one and increased the distance between the magnet
and pickup to 60 thousandths and it has been working fine since.
I thought it was amazing how much the Onan smoothed out after the Pertronix
was installed until I hooked the points back up again and checked the timing
with a light. With the points it's all over the place with the Pertronix
it's rock solid!

The Pertronix unit on my Onan has been running smoothly for 6 years
now. I'm amazed at how well that thing runs when I read all of the
stories here.

Our 6K runs perfect, but I just don't see the need for something that big and so heavy, we've been talking about removing ours too. I think I'd pick up a small light portable 1K just to charge the batteries if we need to. We have a propane stove to boil/perk coffee, propane water heater, all that's left is water pump and lights. I can't see running the 6K Onan to run the A/C, ya can't sleep on top of that noisy shaking thing anyway. Will decide within the next year, but I'm thinking it's oughta there and then I have more room for storage.
Have any of you others removed your Onan's? Thoughts ??? ???
Have a great day !!!

400 lbs...WOW !! Considering how my dry backwoods camping we do, I'd rather carry around an extra 50 gallons of water vs. the Onan.
When is Bean Station ???

John, If you take it out, you will have to reset the ride height. That thing is HHHHHHeavy. Probably 400#. If you pull it out using a floor jack, you'll have to figure out how to get it off the jack! Or just push it off. Be sure to take the wires and fuel line loose first. Then I would probably put the jack under it or better yet screw an eye hook into the hole on the intake and pick it up with an engine lift. Unbolt the slides and remove.
