I am always on the lookout for new spray paints for plastics, like the front and rear headliner on the GMC. I saw an ad for Rust-oleum Universal, says it is for all materials, plastic included. Sprays in all directions, even upside down. Cool, as that is one big problem if you are not removing a headliner.

Then I did a search on the reviews of the product, and they were pretty negative. Here is one sample:

"I bought 4 cans of Rust-Oleum Universal (Hammer On Black). All four cans failed to spray after a few minutes. Each required disassembly and unclogging. The spray patterns were variable from "none" to "stringy" to totally "blob-like" or "blotchy". I have used Krylon Fusion. It works perfectly. In contrast, painting with Rust-Oleum is like trying use a roller brush while riding rabid bull into a burning barn. If anyone from Rust-Oleum reads this, I hope that they post an apology and issue refunds. Their new spray system is the best advertisment for Krylon Fusion that one could ever think of. In short, unless you enjoy paying lots of money for total junk (that will frustrate you until you're insane), just purchase the Krylon Fusion and stay FAR AWAY from the new Rust-Oleum spray paint in the fancy cans."

Now that might be a bit of excessive, but several reviews were similar.

So, it looks like good old Krylon Fusion is still the paint for us to use on plastics. I know that I have been happy with it, other than the inability to spray in can directions other than vertical.

Rob,

Try SEM paint. Spray's on very nice and is specifically designed for automotive use. So far I have sprayed the rear cap, the interior panel for the roof air and some miscellaneous pieces. The color I used was Sail White. It is a perfect match to the original white. I will be using SEM to repaint my dash as well.

Below is a link to a place where I purchased some of my interior materials and they sell SEM paint as well. Also you can see SEM color chart. However I think I found SEM paint on Amazon.com for less then this place.

http://www.yourautotrim.com/semdye.html

Also, check out some pictures of my interior restoration.

Jon,

I looked at your restoration and it looked great so far.
I am looking to buy a GMC coach and I can buy one that has been restored or do a restoration job myself. How long have you been working on your restoration? I know when you finish you will have what you want, so that makes it worth while. Are you doing this in your driveway? I want a GMC coach but I don't want a money pit. I want one I can use before ripping it apart. I know if I located a green one with the green shag carpet, I would have to restore it. Now that you are into your restoration, would you do it again? Is it worth it? Or, would you find one restored?

Thanks
Stan

Rob,

I was fortunate that my father-in-law passed his GMC to me and my wife so I have had nothing into it when I got it. Although he kept his in very good condition and it has been garaged kept for as long as he has owned it (he bought it in 1983) there was/is plenty of work to be done on it. I started the interior last spring along with a bunch of mechanical work (in my driveway) so last summer we never got a chance to use it. To date I have spent somewhere around $8k and will spend close to another $3k this spring. That's okay for me because my efforts are paying off. I have just a few items I am working on this spring and after those are complete I'm good to go.

To answer your question about would I do it again, if I had a large enought garage to work on it, especially of the winter, I think I would. Otherwise I would try to find one that is ready to drive and need little restoration. There are a lot of nice coaches out there for sale.

Rob, feel free to PM me if you would like to know more specifics on what I have done and spent so far.

Plus, I'm sure others here will chime in on their experiences. There is a great amount of knowledge and experience here, much more than me.

The SEM website recommends their proprietary products for cleaning/prep. Are there generic things that work for like cleaning the end caps that might be less expensive? What do you use to clean/prep if using Fusion?

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. I know what ever I buy is going to need some work on it so this winter I built a 34x22x12 garage for that purpose. I need to sheetrock it to get my finals and then I ready to buy.

Thanks again,
Stan

Stan,

Here's a link that will provide some good info:

http://gmcmotorhome.info/buygmc.html

Keep in mind that the info is dated, for instance Tom Warner left the GMC
net YEARS ago! Maybe someone can date the info he provided.

IMHO you're probably going to wind up with $30-40 grand in a GMC. You can
buy one that's "finished" but you won't REALLY KNOW what condition it's in.

HOWEVER, there is one coach up for sale at the moment that is as good as it
gets; it belongs to Steve Ferguson.

I (and probably) everybody else on the GMC net can attest to the fact that
Steve is a perfectionist! ;-)

Here's a link to pictures of his coach:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=33056

It is up for sale for $30K, A BARGAIN as I GA-RON-TEE it would cost you
heaps more than this to get a GMC to this condition!

Steve lives in Sierra Vista, AZ; his contact details are:

Better that building a GMC Garage. A very good customer, impressed that I
could hotwire his 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible in less that 5 minutes
(he broke the key off in the ignition), offered me the use of his 3300 sq ft
storage space with a 10'wide by 9' high garage door....will it fit???

Only thing I will have to do is that when I am there (once a month minimum)
I have to start his cars and check for fluid leaks and battery chargers,
etc...He has 5 stored there now and has 22 others stored at another facility
including Ferrari, Packard, Cord, 57 and 61 Corvette, Lamborghini,
etc....Even a 1972 Datsun Pickup with 12,000 original miles...more on this
later.

Ron and Julie

Thanks for the quick reply. I know what ever I buy is going to need some
work on it so this winter I built a 34x22x12 garage for that purpose. I need

Thanks again,
