Hi there dudes and dudettes;
Talked to my custom cabinet contact yesterday.
He's interested in the project and we talked about some possibilities for making some of the tables. One of his keenest interests in in seeing one of the originals up close.
we talked about updates to the design. Brian has some concern regarding steaming the curved leg and had a idea using a cut to shape ply design. this, he believes, would be easier to manufacture and would have fewer issues over the formed unit.
so, the big question is, does anyone anywhere near to me have one of these tables and be willing to have it examined?
We also talked about producing multiple tables and we agreed that this would be only way to keep the table at a reasonable price.
So, let's go. If we can find a sample table to look at, we can move this forward.

I'd be interested if it can have some offset to the legs. I have my furnace under the left side of the sofa. so I may need a bit of an offset.

Scott,
During your research you've probably learned this, but I haven't seen it
mentioned: Toward the end of the commercial life of the hideaway table, the
designer changed to a metal pedestal. I don't know whether it ever went
into production, but I do know that it was designed and prototyped. That
may be a better, cheaper, way to make the pedestal. That was what I was
contemplating when I wound up designing my "gas powered dining table" --
designing that vertical swing away proved more than I could handle.
Have you contacted Erv Troyer? He probably knows more about the table and
its history than anyone else here through his career in the Indiana RV
industry.

Chris,
I'm putting the furnace under the couch also, and for me it would fit on center.
For you, I can't see any problem with the leg offset to the right side, it will take less of a load on the long side before it has a noticeable leans.
You got any photos of your furnace install?

As you mention the metal leg design, and I have never seen the prototype..... I was considering the comments made about space under the couch.
I had thought that a tri-pod leg design might work well.
one leg connected to the underside of the table near the edge, the other two would swing out, the top secured some way to the table and the bottom legs swing out for stabilization.
The legs would fold together and just slip under the couch in a very small area.
I would think the one leg connected to the table may have a connetion to a slide under the sofa, this will only make the table more stable.
