Question regarding OEM airbag maintenance.

I have my airbags off doing other maintenance and other then just cleaning with soap and water, is there anything else recommended. I thought I recall a thread that some folks were using udder cream on the airbags.

Also, how do you tell the date code of the airbag? I found this number below the Firestone label; 708502. Not sure how to read it but if I had to guess, I would say 1985. If so, this is a 25 year old airbag. In recent topics regarding tires, it was the general recommendation not to drive with tires over 6 years old. Any methodology to the airbag age recommendation?

Thanks

Air bags are dated with letter codes. If you get the two letter code off the
air bag and contact Firestone Customer service they can tranlate
the codes. I called with a 2 letter code and was told month and year
of manufacturing. I don't remember letters or date but I do know
I was unable to relate letters to month or year. I think the letter code
was GC and the translation was February or March of 1993.

Mike
Firestone used 5 different methods to date air bags.

The FIRST method consists of two letters
imprinted onto the Air Spring bellows. The first
letter designates the YEAR in which
the Air Spring was produced, the 2nd letter
designates the MONTH the Air Spring
was produced.

The SECOND method consists of a circular
imprint molded on the Air Spring bellows, in
place of two letters, there is only one letter in
the center of the circular “Clock” indicating the
“YEAR” that it was produced. On the
outside of the circular imprint are a series of 12
segments that will have a “DOT” that states the
specific month that the Air Spring was
produced, (from 1 through 12).

The NEWEST and current method consists of a
circular configuration imprint onto the Air
Spring bellows. In the center of the circular
design is an arrow and on either side of the
arrow there is a number, indicating the year.
Around the perimeter of the circular configuration
are numbers from 1 through 12, indicating the
month the Air Spring was produced.

The fourth and fifth methods do not apply to the airbags used on the
GMC motorhomes.

I am sending more details on this to Mike in the form of a pdf file.
