I was at a local tire store yesterday picking up the
repaired truck tire that had picked up a bolt. The
folks at the desk were talking to a woman about this
very thing that they would put her two new tires on
the rear.

I had always put two new on the front (if I were only
replacing two) considering that is where steering
(and correction) occurs.

The explanation of potential end-swap due to any
reason of reduced traction makes a lot of sense.

As I have always replaced ALL tires at once since
I was an almost perpetually broke teenager, I had
not given this any thought before.

Does this apply to rear wheel drive only?

No - any drive configuration. You always want the fronts to slip or slide first. If the rears slide first the vehicle wants to swap the end that is heading down the road. Watch the referenced video, it will explain and show all of that.

I needed 2 new tires on the front of my Chev Z71 4WD pickup last spring. My favourite tire store would only put them on the back. In the fall I had the other 2 replaced (now on the front) and again he put the news to the back and moved the ones from the spring to the front.

He said he refuses to install the tires otherwise. I was skeptical until I saw that video!

New to the back from now on!

The only problem is that they only addressed steering and only with a driver that does no know how to drive with the drift. I would prefer to deal with the drift than have the front end washout in a turn or hard braking.

But then, who ever heard of a vehicle losing rear traction on hard braking (is there an emoticon for tongue in cheek?).

G'day,

Would someone please explain to me how you wind up needing only two tires if
you rotate them after running the same distance?

We use Double Trouble once a year for a three month tour and one of the
things I do is rotate the tires at the end of the year's tour.

For two years the three month tour has been about 4000 miles.

Generally we don't get too much discussion whether you want to set up your GMC to be loose (oversteering) or tight (understeering). This sounds like a Nascar test session? Laughing

Actually, it sounds like the tire people are getting lawyered up for liability reasons. As an old gokarter and autocrosser, I like my toys set up somewhat loose, but I don't think I want to be drifting a GMC!

I, for one, am getting darned tired of being told what I can and cannot do
by every Tom, Dick, and Harry that governments and lawyers stir up one way
or another. We're being treated like, and perhaps are becoming a mob of
mindless robots. Maybe sheep herded by dogs. Home of the free???

Replacing two tires every other year is one way to keep from having a large tire bill every 6 years or so. Another way would be to set aside $12 (or so) every month for tires. Then it wouldn't matter 2 every 2 or 6 every 6, the money will be there... unless tire prices go up.

The first I heard about the end swapping problem and putting the best tires on the rear was about 12 years ago from my "tire guy" brother. (Who now manages a tire store in the Phoenix area.) For most drivers, directional stability is more important than directional control. It is by far more of an issue for winter tires.

I really do not think it is issue with our coaches. Each pair of our tires carry more weight than the total weight of most cars.

Mike,

I can appreciate the financial aspects of what you are saying below,
however, I'm sorry but I still don't understand if you rotate the tires at
equal mileage intervals why they would not all wear out at the same time.

Are you saying that it's more cost effective to leave the rears on the rear
and keep changing the fronts as they wear out?

Has anyone done this and if yes what mileage did they get out of the front
tires? How many years did it take to wear them out?

Frankly I doubt that I will ever wear the tires out on either of my GMC's
and that they will age out and need to be replaced at the same time.

From the data that has been presented to and opinions expressed on the GMC
net tires age out from 5 to 10 years. Personally I'll vote for 7.

In 2008 I fitted Kuhmo Road Venture KL78 tires from the Tire Rack. In 2015 I
will need to replace them. Currently they are selling for $97.00 each
($582.00) at the Tire Rack plus $129.28 to ship them from Shreveport, LA to
Humble, TX making a total of $710.28. The inflation rate for the past ten
years has been 2.82%; ramp it up to 3% the $710 will become $822. Divide
that by 60 and you come up with $14 per month, so $12 was a good estimate!

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Road+Ventur
e+AT+KL78&partnum=275QR6KL78OWL10&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

I agree you would have to go some to get a GMC to swap ends! Boy that WOULD
be one hell of a ride!
