I have used Mobile I 15-50 which I understand contains ZDDP. If I add an ZDDP additive am I overdoing it ? I have always used 30 weight in my Porsche '66 912. Should I add ZDDP ? Thanks ( I promise never to ask a ZDDP question again).

You are going to have to look at the rating of the oil you are using. If the can says it is rated CJ-4 or SM, YOU DO NOT WANT IT.

SM oil and CJ-4 is less than 800 ppm ZDDP. You want at least 1200 to 1400 ppm.

Also if you are using / burning oil, do NOT use Synthetic.

I was just reading some GM service bulletins last week. In them GM stated that any oil consumption over 1 quart per 2,000 miles (3200 kms) was a problem that should be addressed.

I've been dumping Mobile 15-50 into my 911 for about 5 years now and so far,
the engine is in one piece. And if you saw the way I flogg it, you'd shake
your head.
I know this isn't an answer, but it's a start...<g>

The High Mileage Mobil 1 oils (10W 30 and 10W 40) are rated for ACEA A3 which, as you are probably aware, is a European standard very similar to our API standards but are tougher and without EPA control. Very few oils make the grade of an ACEA A3 rating. It is the toughest standard for cam and lifter wear in existance, anywhere. These oils are perfect for flat tappet engines without adding additional phosopherus or zinc. Mobil uses more phosphorus rather than zinc. I wouldn't use it for break in but there is no better oil for flat tappet engines that are broken in IMHO. Syntec 20W 50 is also ACEA A3 rated and is just as good. If its good enough for older flat tappet Ferraris, it's good enough for GMCs. Adding more ZDDP will detract from their lubrication characteristics and is a waste of money. However ZDDP additives may be necessary to use in oils with an inferior base stock to the High Mileage Mobil 1 and Syntec oil but still will not be as good. Not all Mobil 1 oils or Syntec oils are ACEA A3 rated, so check. There are other ACEA ratings but the A3 is the best for our application. The Jeep guys are well aware of this (ACEA A3) because their engines used flat tappets all the way up through 2005 in the famous 4.0 liter Straight 6 cylinder AMC motor.

Mobil 1 15-50 is, according to Mobil, 1200ppm phosphorous and 1300ppm Zinc.
References on Mobil's website-

-Product Guide https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Files/Mobil_1_Product_Guide.pdf
On the guide 15-50 is rated SM and many of the A3 rated products have much lower ppm counts.
I'm confused and have two cases of this stuff (15-50) ready to go for the ARK and three other of my older flat tappet applications.
Help!
Cheers all,
Richard and the ARK

G'day,

I would suggest you contact Mobil directly:

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Home/Contact_Us.aspx

When you do provide the information that is on the bottles of Mobil 1 that
you have.

Richard,

Good to hear from you after a long hiatus! I've missed you.

Every now and then I refer someone to you about Omnistor awnings but I never
hear anything more. Are you still fooling with them, or should I stop
pestering you?
