Good Evening Everyone

Well, I let my rat brain take over again and now I sit here having to send out an apology.

I was wrong in sending out the note on the Birch Screen Door issue like I did, I let my frustration get the best of me.

I want to apologize for sending it like I did and I especially want to apologize to Bob B for doing it. I have no idea what situation he's in or what's going on in his life, I was not trying to embarrass him or belittle him here, I was just frustrated and vented in the wrong way.

I got messages from many of you stating how Bob has helped you on many other things and there is no doubt that he is very well respected.

Thanks to all of you that responded in trying to help me on the door issue and thanks to all of you that sent comments telling me that this was wrong.

I sincerely appreciate all of you and your input.

Ray, you are a good man. Bob has also helped me many times. One of the most helpful GMCers I know. He even let me and Ken B. sleep in his coach last year at the work rally in Ohio. We all know how it is to get frustrated. Happened to me not long ago.

I just know I read here somewhere that what you are looking for is
available at a big box store. Someone here reported that and I wish I
had paid more attention.

Ray,

Just spent some time at Lowes looking at the trim for FRP (fiberglas panels) but none of the stock sizes match your profile sketch. They have a book for special orders but the book was not available for my review. Also looked at suspended ceiling fittings -- but again nothing in inventory matched.
Some auto door trim -- the type with the metal crimp vinyl covered edge and the attached round rubber insulation might be made to work.

Perhaps it could be made by gluing two or more types of molding togehter? Maybe a "U" channel and an "L" or a "T"??? If it is ABS or PVC, you can use the usual pipe glue (Solvent weld). If it is styrene, model glue will work. The store bought stuff will usually be printed with what it is made of, and if not, use the UPC barcode to look it up on the MFG website.

If not, I need a screen door. Razz

Speaking of wood screen doors, I'm not sure if I told this story or not........I was telling my wife that I wanted to find and install a Birch screen door.

She said, "why would you want to install a birch door, that's wood, won't it warp" ? I sat there and laughed so hard.......then when I explained what a birch door was she smacked me ! It was a riot ! I still sit and chuckle about it.

Have a great day !!!

Ray,

Your wife is a lot smarter than me! I NEVER thought about a "Birch" door
being made of wood!

However, this has gotten me to thinking. I have seen very curvy lounge
chairs made out of laminated plywood.

I wonder if it would be possible to make a "mold" a bit wider than the door
that matched the curvature of the GMC and use it to form three 1/4" plywood
sheets in layers one glued on top of the next from which a screen door could
be cut?

I have posted this before but since there appears to be interest in
screen doors I will post it again. A replacement idea for screen door.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5374
I understand the manufacture is no longer in business so one might
possibly get another screen manufacturer to start building these.
My Birch screen door is not all it is cranked up to be.

Rob, Wood would be a good option. In the past boatbuilding life we did a
numerous "curvy" laminated screen doors and windows using 3mm baltic birch
plywood cut into 17mm strips and then using an aluminum jig and clamps did
some nice compound curves with the baltic birch plywood strips. Using epoxy,
the frames had remarkable strength. Very time consuming though. In looking
at the inside of the door frame you could almost wax the heck out of the
inside of the frame and use it as the template with a lots of little clamps
to hold the plywood strips. You would get an exact match and then just need
to relieve the sides for a really tight fit. That would be like a 6 large
cans of Fosters day mate!!

Thanks

The stuff at home depot, lowes, etc, is regular u-shaped paneling trim pieces for a regular door.
I have never seen the complicated molding required for the birch screen door there, and I spend
far too much time (and money) at such places...

Still doesn't fix your problem. If someone offers a product then he
(or she) should back it up......Terry

As far as I know Bill has never "offered a product".

He bought the rights to the Birch acreen door but has never gone into
production

He also got a limited amount of parts from Mr. Birch and has made them
available to people but he hasn't had an extruder fabricate any
plastic molding yet. That can be extremely costly with the most
expensive part being in having an extrusion die fabricated and
ordering perhaps several thousand feet of plastic extrusion to meet
the minimum order requirement.

If he ever decides to go into production I assume he will get the
extrusions at that time

Personally I doubt that there is a large enough market to justify the
front end costs togear up to production and that may be what Bill has
determined.

I once owned a company that used 20 different aluminum extrusions for
a product and we had about $80000 invested in dies alone

Excuse me. I said Bill but I meant Bob. Bob Burkitt.

Confirming Emery's comments about Bob Burkitt and the
"Birch" screen door, he does have some parts that he will
sell. I needed the top molding/left side when entering Mh.
It is the one that often gets shoulder-brushed when entering
and leaving. I installed the door 17 years ago and this is
the first part I have had to replace. I considered the price
Bob asked to be reasonable and found him to be a stand-up
person to deal with. I didn't ask about his production
plans, if any, and he did not offer any information. I don't
know if he is soliciting parts inquiries but he was
cooperative in accommodating me. If you have a parts need,
his email address is rburkitt@cinci.rr.com. He is prompt to
respond to email.
