Just had my '77 403 smogged as required by the state of California
for registration.
Got me to thinking; did GM have to make any changes to sell
these coaches in California?
Is there additional (of different) equipment on the coaches
which were sold in California?
Next question, is there a way to check to see if mine
was first sold here in CA?
Maybe with the VIN # ???

And there are (were) heat shields on the exhaust pipes next to the fuel tanks. My 74 was sold in MS but came with CA emissions options. ?????

I had mine done after it came in from MI. The gent who tested it had no
what idea what to look for. Five years later, and two different smog
stations they still have no idea.
Cheers,

Our '78 came up on the computer as national standards rather than California standards. This would make sense as it has one canister. There is a visual portion of the CA test and my station seemed to know what to look for.
Now, how it was first set up as a national standards, I don't know as the glove box no longer has any sticker. My smog man had told me it would tell him once it started the test. Big Brother knows.

I have a California coach. It had the above listed items of carb, heat shields, and 2 canisters. All of that crap is now gone except the exhaust heat shields. My California PO changed the carb before I got it. I got rid of the canisters and TVS.

So outside of what a previous owner passed along,
how do I know if mine was first sold in California?
Is it in the registry records?

Look for two heat shields on the exhaust pipe as it passes along side of the gas tanks.
Look for two charcoal canisters mounted low on the firewall behind the rear of the engine on the passenger side. If there is only one canister it is a USA / Canada coach. If there are two it is a Peoples Republic of Kalifornia coach.

My take was to go the other way with the canister. I bought a new separator and canister so 1) I would never smell gas and 2) I get to burn what would have evaporated off to the four winds.

That is probably not a bad idea in California. I put it on my list of "to do's", but I know I'll never go around to doing it.
