Thanks!

Richard,

I 1" insulated cellular blinds by Hunter-Davis from Home Depot over 10 years
ago. They still look like brand new. They've provided great insulation
against heat transfer, in or out, because of the aluminum lining inside the
"honeycomb" -- they actually advertise a higher R-factor than for
thermo-pane windows on RV's. With full surround valences, there's very
little convective heat transfer from the windows.

If there's a shortcoming, it is that they pass NO light when closed -- a
positive feature to me, but not to everyone's taste. I think someone found
them with a "lower from the top" feature which would allow some light in
without sacrificing privacy.

That "lower from the top" or bottom feature sure is nice for air
circulation. They sure keep the heat out too. You don't realize how
well they work til you lower or raise them on a hot day.

Valences are available from us or jim B.
Curtains are not prefered as the walls slant.

G'day,

Double Trouble has pleated pull down shades and The Blue Streak has Venetian
blinds.

The nice thing about Venetian blinds is that you can lower them and block
out the light yet leave them cracked a bit, open the windows and turn on the
Fantastic Fans and you get air circulation through the windows.

I know, I know air will come in through the sides of the shades!

I assume that some of the upper cabinets need to be
removed to install the valances? Is that correct?

About how many?

Jim, what options do you have to fit my '77 Palm Beach?

Thanks

Hi Richard,

First of all, congratulations on your "new" GMC!

As for advice on taking down the cabinets, disconnect any electrical wiring at the connectors and remove any plastic shrouds. I found that taking out the bolts into the side rails first worked well. After they are out, have a helper hold one end while you hold the other and remove the remaining bolts into the roof structure. My Dad was more "coaching" than "helping" in the attached picture!

<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=29456&title=stripping-out-the-old&cat=5184>

If you are looking for options for window coverings, Cinnabar did ours. The day/night shades are built into the surrounds (or valances). Its a bit pricey, but they do a nice job.

Finally, there is a woman that advertises day/night shades on the supplier website. Her name is Margaret Guske. She may even be the one who supplies Cinnabar (?). Follow the link and look on the left side of the page for contact info.

So besides that fact that you have to use rods at the top and bottom of curtains due to the slanted walls, are there other disadvantages??

I'm not a fan of blinds...

Richard,

If you need to take the overhead cupboards down and you are working alone, up cargo bars. Like Harbor Freight 55172. I can be set up to hold the cupboard in place while you get the screws back in. Having a friend to help is better, but this beats nothing.

My coach had black plexiglas side guides installed when I bought it.I made new ones out of a 4.5 x 4.5 pvc fence post using the old ones for a pattern. I made enough for all the side and back windows in an afternoon. Another afternoon to install them. Cost of three fence posts about $50. Probably not as fancy as others but they work for me. BTW, PVC takes paint very nicely.

Hi Jim. Was that a "no you don't need to remove the cabinets"? Do you remove the boards at the back of the cupboards or reach up with a screwdriver bit on a socket wrench?

Also, what colour are the valances that you and Jim sell...?

Thanks to everyone for their advice (and pix!) on this.

I borrowed a rear cabinet from BB.Pettit that needed to be repaired as
a pattern, this is out of a 78 ell and the blinds are attached to back
of the cabinet and not to the coach. The attaching points for the
cabinet are up through the front horizontal 1 by into the coach
structure overhead and there is a horizontal attaching into the side
of the coach.

So besides that fact that you have to use rods at the top and bottom of curtains due to the slanted walls, are there other disadvantages??

I'm not a fan of blinds...

I like both blinds and honeycomb for different reasons.

BLINDS
can be opened slightly for light or to pass air ( Twisted Evil ), of course I meant ventilation.

The blinds will allow light in where unless you have honey comb that pass light through the material, they will be dark.

Blinds can pass air when installed in a side valance where the honeycomb can stop most ventilation unless you purchase the top/bottom opening honeycomb shade.

HONEYCOMB
allow you to have some kind of r rating to keep the heat out(or in), blinds leak in this respect.

HC keep drafts down as they are solid rather than slats

HC can block all light out, blinds can only attempt this.

HC blocks views inside where blinds won't do as well.

LarC ( Needing to think really hard on what exactly you want the blind or HC to do for each have a very good use in the GMC depending on your needs. )
