Fuel Fill Pipe Rubber Connectors Replacement? [message #77891] |

I'm going to replace one of the rubber connectors purchased from Jim K. Anyone with experience doing this please give me some guidance. This one is near the fuel tank.

We did mine several years ago.
It was a slow and dirty job. Think we spent 4/5 man-hours on it.

If you are talking about the connector on the upper part of the fill tube, on our '74 there are two flaps cut in the plastic sidewall. The front (toward the front) lets you get to the big filler hose. The one in back (by the couch back) is to get to the vent. I just looked in the front flap to see what it was all about. I have little monkey hands and it looked like someone worked at that one.
The filler tube at the front has one more at the bottom.
The ones along the filler tube at the tanks are not too bad. (Again, '74 is my reference) The rear one is an elbow. That is easy as the new rubber is very pliable. It connects to a steel tube going forward. The steel clamps to the frame. Loosen the clamps and it will slide back enough to do the next one, which is connected to a T. There are three there, one to the tube, one to the tank and one going on forward. THere is enough wiggle to get them loose. Not a lot of fun, as after you drain out 500 gallons of gas, there will be about 10 more gallons to drip, slop, spill, run along frame rails and generally make you fairly grumpy.
So, start at the back, in my opinion. This will let you slide the steel tubes if you cannot get enough play to squeeze the hoses in. I have never done the ones in the front.
If you fill hoses are bad, you might want to think about dropping the tanks and doing those. After getting the filler hoses loose, you have accomplished some of the ugly stuff in dropping tanks. Hydraulic jack with a square piece of wood attached. Tom Whitton had a great picture of this. The list is telling me I have a 1Kb limit on upload. Humph. Send me an e-mail, or perhaps Tom can send it to you.
By the way, if you drop the tanks after 10 gallons of gas has dripped on you, you will find there is still about two or three more waiting... just waiting.
All in all, easier than the bottom radiator hoses for a '37 Ford pickup.

Just be sure to have a friend help you so the gas leaks all over him instead of you...just ask George how I know (lol)
