I may have to replace the house battery.  Mike said most owners  "replace the one 12v with two 6v batteries in the rear for the house bank." I'm sure this has been addressed a million times but what's the reason this is a better solution than one big 12v?

You want deep cycle batteries to run the stuff in the house not a 12 volt cranking battery which most 12 volt batteries are.

Two 6 volt golf cart batteries give you much a higher storage capacity in a deep cycle battery at a relatively inexpensive cost.

Yes, there is nothing like the furnace quitting in the middle of the night due to a dead battery.

Richard,

Golf cart style 6v batteries are very common and mass-produced. That pretty much makes them cheaper for the same energy storage than all other batteries out there. They are the desired true deep cell that is needed for "the house" application. TRUE deep cell 12v batteries are rare and because of this rarity... expensive. Most 12v batteries marketed as deep cells, like most marine batteries, are not truly deep cells -- but they still cost more!

A single 12v battery that holds the same as the 2 6v's would weigh about twice as much and is a fixed shape. As such, the 6v's are easier to fit into tight spaces and are easier on the back. The down side is the cable, with two additional connections, between the two 6v cases. You also have to have a pair of battery hold downs. (Minor issues -- IMHO)

Select batteries by weight... heavier = more lead = more storage.

Ken, your furnace should never run your house battery down. Put a protection device in line. I think mine will shut down when battery voltage hits 12 volts, or there abouts. Of course, with 4 6 volts, that I have, it is not likely to run it down that low anyway. And, once we are in bed, I make sure to turn that thing all the way down. Makes for closer sleeping to Teri. Very Happy She does not read the net so she has no idea why it seems to get chillier after I hit the sack.

Go check out www.lifelinebattery.com they jabe pleanty of options for battery banks in 12 and 6 volt. Their agm batterys properly taken care of can last 10 years or more.

The only problem here with using 6 volt batteries is that when wired in series you only get the rated AH capacity of one battery. So space permitting I'd try to go with 12 volt 4 or 8d batts. However you can construct larger banks using lifelines 6v batteries given the limited space we have in our coaches....

Tom,

Do not hold your breath... Richard uses the original email version of the forum. More specifically he gets the "Digest", a single email with several postings to reduce the number of emails.

To "Turn on PM" you would have to talk him into using the web based forum. Besides, If you used email, you would have his email address! (No PM's required.) Twisted Evil

Richard and everyone else... Use whatever flavor of the forum you want... just keep reading and posting.

I saw our local (California) Costco is stocking
6 volt golf cart batteries.

Look and color of them makes me thing they
may have been made by Trojan.
Were they?

Have any of you tried them?

Gene,

Got any details?

Are they made by Trojan? Have they proven to be
'long life'?

Would you buy more?

Thanks

I have them on both the 26 and the 23. I am sort of a fatalist on this,
they are the only game in town. At about $60 (? I ignored the actual cost
;>) they are about 1/2 the cost of a Trojan, (if you can find them) .

Any lead-acid is really only good for about 3 years, life. After that , it
is a gift with reduced capacity, (my trojans lasted about 7 years).

I have them in my golf cart and GMC. You can't beat the price. I
bought one of those kits that ties all of the caps together so you can
fill from a quick disconnect source. Keeping up with water loss and
maintaining them is much more convenient and overfilling is
impossible. I have the same setup on my GMC and SOB.

I have a new set of Costco 6-V batteries in my coach that I installed in early January. I can't really vouch for their longevity, but the are working fine, and, as others have said, you can't beat the price.

Steve,

What battery fill system do you use? As you know, it is a somewhat inconvenient chore to check and fill the batteries, even with a Ragussa slide out tray. I would love to make that task easier (and fool proof).

Thanks Gene, But even with a smart charger and a combiner, in "it's a dry heat" Arizona, I have had to add water frequently (to my old batteries). Maybe the new ones will not need as much attention.

Carl,

Here's what I have on the two 6 volt house batteries down the back in Double
Trouble:

http://www.flow-rite.com/battery-watering/pro-fill-rv

Here's what I have on the two 12 volt batteries up front (one start and one
house):

http://www.flow-rite.com/battery-watering/qwik-fill

They are available from Camping World:

http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/product/flow-rite-remote-battery-fill-s
ystems/4592

The system above is for 12 volt batteries but for some reason I can't find
the ones for 6 volt batteries on the Camping World website and I did buy
both of them from there.
