I just received a note from Michael Bozardt. After spending all day he has given up on getting his distributor in right.

I'm asking one or two of you at the GMCMI rally to take a trip to his location (NW side of Houston). I put his address in MS streets and trip and it looks like it is right at 50 miles to his location.

With a couple hundred of you there, there ought to be someone who can install and time a distributor and are willing to spend a couple of hours to get him going so he can make the rally.

Come on guys. We have had 72 forum users and who knows how many emailers look at this posting in the last 4 hours.

Still no volunteers? Michael needs some help. He is in NW Houston.

I got an email from him about 7:30PM.

Try the phone again.

I just came back from a Black List call in NW Indiana about 6 miles from the Michigan line. He called at 11:30 PM. I will not say who it was because he is embarrassed. After I got up there all that was wrong was the gas gauge is off and he ran out of gas. It also appears that the tank switching electric valve is not working because going to reserve did not work. I did not investigate it too much because we were laying under the coach on the ground on the wet shoulder in the dark with the traffic wizzing by. It was 32 - 33 degrees outside. I got nervous enough about the traffic that I towed him off of the Interstate and up the exit ramp to finish working on it and to get it going.

He was about 3/4 of a mile short of making an exit. 5 gallons of gas got him going. He went to a local gas station to fillup. It took 44 gallons including the 5 I brought for him.

I left him at the local Wally World to spend the night.

Keep trying to get Michael on the phone. I think he is really discouraged over this whole thing. I'll send him an email to phone you.

Time to go to bed.

Just wondering if Michael got the help he needed and if so what was the fix?

The last I heard was they were trying to call him and there was no answer on his phone number. That was Saturday. I have heard nothing more. Unfortunately I am 1200 miles from there so I can not help much more from here.

Hopefully someone at the rally will let us know. The rally now only has two more days left, so if he hasn't made it by now it is pretty much too late.

I spoke with JimK yesterday in Montgomery and told him there were no 408 area code calls on my phone. That is the area code for his cell phone so he must have called the wrong number.

No one showed up but Len Laycock called me Monday evening when he read Ken's post. He offered to come here though he is 60 + miles away. I really appreciated that.
Thanks Ken for trying to get help for me.

THE STORY:
1)Ethanol clogs carb outside El Paso, got towed in and they sprayed carb to clean it
2)Bought a new Paterson carburetor.
3)Discovered intake manifold had three cracks.
Called around and was told it could not be welded correctly.
4)Ordered the GMC aluminum manifold.
5)Istalled manifold.
6)Failed to properly mark the distributor so that when reistalled, engine would not start.
7)Read the book-removed #1 plug but could not put finger over plug hole to feel compression stroke and operate the ignition key simultaneously. Brought my remote start switch next day.
8)Kept trying to get dist. to line up with #1 plug wire. Was not working.
9)Okay, let's try the HEI ignition-did not work. Note: if you install an HEI be sure it is powered by the full 12 volts and connected to a switched source(meaning it ain't "hot" when the key is off) Don't ask how I know that. I connected a 14 gauge wire to a terminal on the upper 20A fuse in the fuse box behind the glove box. Do not connect it to the coil wiring. These wires have less than 12 volts.
10)Suspect the module in the HEI needed replacement.
11)Went back to the point ignition distributor. Discovered it turned counter clockwise. I had been working it as though clockwise.
12)At first, turned over but no start. Move dist. and it starts but runs rough. Also fried my remote starter switch-guess you are not supposed to use it after engine starts.
13)Decided the distributor must be 1 or 2 teeth off-but which way, clockwise or counter clockwise. Left it at that.

If I was closer I would have come by to help. Did you ever get it running correctly?

Give this a try.
Disconnect the battery. Remove all 8 plugs.
Crawl under with a big socket on a breaker bar.
Have someone hold finger over #1 spark plug hole (or reach up and do it
yourself).
Turn engine over with big socket on crankshaft nut till grove in damper
aligns with TDC mark on timing tab.
If you felt pressure as you approached TDC mark, you are at top dead center
of compression stroke on #1 cylinder. If no pressure, rotate crank one full
turn.
With cap on distributor, make a mark on the body of the distributor adjacent
to the #1 plug wire position in the cap. Remove the cap. Turn the rotor
until it's over the mark on the body.
Keeping the rotor in this position, install distributor.
