Making progress in the process of getting the hub spacers installed. Thanks to all for info and advice on the jack questions. Stopped at Harbour Frieght this morning. OMG it's worse than Home Depot for a person with my weaknesses/addictions. I could hear the sucking sound pulling on my bank account when I opened the door. They didn't have any low-profile 4-ton bottle jacks, though they did have a 3-ton floor jack for $100 and some jack stands for $20. I was a little overwhelmed by it all so just looked and didn't buy. I'll make another trip to the store closer to me this weekend.
In any case, looking forward to sometime soon when I'll have a jack and jack stands and will get it up in the air and get the wheels off and put the hubs on.
So now the torque question. I may have mentioned that auto mechanic-wise I'm a real novice. I know about torque wrenches, but don't own one. When I put the hub spacers on, can I just crank them down tight to my feel, like you would putting on a tire (presumably doing the star-rotation or whatever it's called, alternating tightening from one side of the hub to the other) or do I need to buy a torque wrench?
Thanks

Jay,
I doubt that you will find low profile bottle jacks at Harbor Freight I
checked their website again and again with no luck.
Low profile bottle jacks are available from Northern Tool:
http://tinyurl.com/l3yvbg
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200318933
_200318933
Unfortunately there aren't any in Oregon. They do have a store in Houston on
I-45 and if you know anyone from your neck of the woods that would bring a
couple back for you that would save you the shipping. The reason I say two
is I use mine to stabilize the rear of the coach when we camp with a bogie
hook in both sides.

Jay,
I doubt that you'll be able to feel 250 ft lbs of torque. Best buy
the wrench and get it over with. There is more than one pair of
fasteners on the GMC that will require you to use that wrench. You
can save some money by first checking pawn shops. Excellent men's
malls.

Sure you can "feel" 250 ft lbs. It feels like a hernia.

Off topic, but a homeowner orders a couple of plants in large concrete planters. The delivery man and the homeowner struggle mightily to unload them from the truck, and place them on the porch. After he catches his breath, the homeowner mentions to the driver, "boy that sure is a dandy double hernia you've got there" The driver says, "oh, I just deliver them, I don't know what they're called"
