Is this a blonds vs red head kind of thing? Is the extra displacement worth the work (and by worth - does it yield some performance gain)? Or is it a cool thing to so and so why not?
Is there dyno data on the differences, or even "I had an Olds but now life is better" kind of stories?
They say no question is too dumb to ask.
Thanks in advance.

I have a friend, here in Tucson, that had a '77, bought in '78 (Edgemont, I think) who replaced his 403 with a 500 ci Cadillac. He explained to me "back in the day" that there was no way to gear down the final drive (except for, maybe the 3.21) and the best way to get 'more power' was to do the Cad swap. I think that was the origin of that procedure, but these days, with the gearing options available to us, I think it is (as the Pennsylvania Dutch would say) "just for so".
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I suspect I'll wind up replacing my 3.55 FD with a 3.07 -- or a 2.73. We'll
see how the 23' tows & climbs first.

I can tell you that the additional cubes are noticeable, but I never
sell that to our customers.
One time few years ago, we had a customer that needed a 3.70 so we
dropped it and sent him one. We then replaced it with a 3,21.
When I went up to Oregon and back I could tell enough difference to
where I thought there was something wrong with the engine.
With out advising me,our guys put in another3.70 when the gears came
in. I then hadt go to Nevada. Well, when I got back the guys asked if
it was running better. I answered them that it was running great now
and asked them what they did.
540cid with 3.70 was much better than the 3.21.
Even a big engine can benefit from going in the torque curve sooner.
Neil, I cannot advise you to go Cad or not.
