I am considering mounting a TV ahead of the rear facing dinette seat, pointing back. Has anyone used the gas struts used to hold a genset door open, to lift a TV? How about a beefed up adaptation of a power antenna design? I'm only thinking about a 19"-24" TV, but it seems like a good use of space.

There certainly are gas struts that could easily support the weight of such a TV, but the problem would be how to keep them in the closed position. I think the plastic housings on most small TVs would present a problem. If you built a mount that attached to the rear mounting points (like a computer monitor), the metal bracket could certainly stand the pressure from the struts.
There are also electric linear actuators that are used routinely in this sort of application. That would be the best way to do this. I know Jim Bounds has used some in his modified couches with good success. However, I don't think they are cheap.
Enjoy your project in good health!

HaHa. Tired of that old 13 incher bobbing away behind your head as you drive? LOL.
The motor linear actuators are nice, but overkill. You could use the gas struts mounted to a plate on the 4x4 (or 4.5 x 4.5?) hole pattern on the back of the unit. You would need to make some sort of latch to hold it down when stowed, but a simple rotating block of wood would do that or a lid with a latch.
I'm mounting mine in the ceiling ahead of the front vent in that dropped channel I mounted. It will hinge down.

Randy,
Great Idea.
I like the idea of using an electric window motor. I don't see why you couldn't take the mechanism from an electric window and use the same principal to raise the TV. I can envision mounting a small flat screen TV to a nice stained board at the rear mounting holes. Then attaching two light duty drawer slides vertically to the back. From there using the rack & gear system w/motor from the electric window, you should be able to make it work. This should be an inexpensive way to go.
Looking forward to seeing how you do it. Good luck.

I thought about the hinge-down design, but I didn't want to carve up my headliner (however, I'll probably end up carving up my genset door, but that's another story). Plus I'd invariably whack my head on it to the delight of my travelling companions.
The hide a way eats up a couple inches from one side of the dinette, but maybe I just eat a couple more salads and watch less TV to begin with...

Are you talking about behind the driver/passenger seat?? facing the table?
As someone mentioned, there are linear actuators, Surplus Center still has some for about $100
One of the fellas made a swing out stand kind of arrangement that looks good.
another swings out from under the cabinet while another is hidden IN the cabinet.
I worked on a design for someone some time back, it involved drawer slides to go up and down and a mini hoist arrangement, 12vdc that responded to a simple limit switch design.
The hoist was small and used a small cable, interesting set up.
It was designed to come out of a cabinet, but behind the seat you could make it like a drawer that goes up and down.
If you want to forgo the automation, just pull the unit up and use a window lock or door bolt to hold it up.
Interesting idea

Larry..
What surplus center are you referring to? An already made up linear actuator sounds pretty good to me..

Surplus Center on the internet
https://www.surpluscenter.com/sort.asp?UID=2468031212245101&catname=electric&keyword=EALD
There are several types here.
Look for the models that can be programed ( if you get the control unit ).
Otherwise, some of the othersones may have a limit switch for end travel.
Remember, you can double the length of movement if you connect the slide unit to a cable and have the LinAct push in the middle of the cable. make a 4" stroke move an object 6 to 8 inches. etc.
Good luck.
