There is a 78 coach in LaGrange NC that we think is what we are looking for. Before I travel 782 miles one way to look at it, I am wondering if anyone on the net might be closer and willing to take a look at it for us? Or, does anyone know the coach?

I emailed them and the son said he was selling it for his 83 year old father and would not send me any interior shots. All he said was come look at it.

Can anyone help?

Wayne,

Flic Acosta in Jacksonville, NC might be persuaded to take a look at it for
you; he's the closest I know to Lagrange.

Mike in Cove City is going to put eyeballs on it Tuesday. He said he saw it a few years ago and it is all electric. Never heard of that and hope there is at least a propane furnace.

I took the propane out of my GMC a few years ago. Never missed it. Re-insulated the headliner and almost all the walls, got an AC with a heat strip, and use a small electric heater if it gets really cold. Never actually needed the heater and I've used the GMC down to 25 degrees at night. We don't dry camp, so there is always electricity available.

The upside, of course, is storage. Haul out the propane tank and you get a rather large exterior cabinet. Haul out the gas stove and range, and you can substitute an electric cooktop and a small microwave in the same space. Not having a gas range allows you to remove the exhaust fan and earns you an entire overhead cabinet. Yeah, I put in fantastic fans so the coach doesn't smell of what we are cooking. Haul out the furnace and all the hoses and you get a ton of space under the couch plus a rather large cabinet underneath the sink (relatively unmolested Glenbrook floorplan).

The water heater is stock electric and still works by some miracle. The fridge is stock although I ran a larger gauge wire to it for 12 volt operation and it works much better now. Why would you want to drive around with a propane bomb in the back of your motorhome? And yes, I call it a bomb. When I was a kid we towed a trailer and our car caught fire. When the dual propane tanks on the front of the camper heated, leaked, and exploded on the side of the road only the firefighters who saw it happening and moved people a couple hundred yards back down the road saved lives. The first couple cars in the traffic jam were shredded with shrapnel.

Yeah, I know. Propane is pretty safe and this was a rare occurrence. But I don't miss it, love the extra storage, and it suits us. If you don't want to dry camp, or go camping in the real cold, a few modifications to the coach insulation and some alternative heat sources will cover you almost all the time.
