I just started to maintained the generator so that I could use it. I found an exhaust leak were the muffler mounts to the exhaust manifold. I took off the muffler and was surprised to find it was loose and held on by two self tapping screws into the exhaust manifold and clamp that did not seal the exhaust. The muffler mounting bracket was broken. The vertical pipe was the wrong size. I fixed the pipe 1 3/8 and it now fits 1 1/4. Has anyone had to build a new bracket to hold the muffler and if so how. From looking at the few views in the manuals it looks like the muffler is supposed to be rigid mount.

Thanks

I used a short piece of Uni-strut and bolted that to the bracket for the muffler. I then used a couple large stainless steel hose clamps to clamp the muffler to the uni-strut.

Uni-strut runs parallel to the muffler with the open end towards the muffler to accommodate the curve of the muffler housing.

That would work but the bracket for the muffler is broken

I am thinking of building a bracket that would mount to starter to replace the broken bracket.

Do not mount anything to the starter bracket. It is known to break.
There is a muffler bracket one needs to cut off the old muffler and reuse.

Art,
I think your unit was worked by someone that did not understand
fasteners as there are no screws used on the exhaust manifold to the
pipe.
I'll bet you have a 73-75 coach?

Art,
The muffler has a metal tongue welded to it which has two holes -- and is attached with two bolts (1/4 20 by about 1 inch). The attachment point as I recall is either on the fan shroud or the cross member.
My answer may not be clear -- but maybe someone has a photo....

I just went out a cleaned some of the grease off of where I thought a bracket
as mounted. It looks like part of the casting. If so still need a way to
upport the muffler to the generator. I can attach it to the muffler if a i can
ttach it to the generator. The only way I see is by the starter but as Jim
ointed out that is a weak point. Any ideas? The head on the exhaust exit side
lready has one broken bolt in the head now. I have not tried to take out the
olt yet but my luck with easyouts has not been to good.

annot find any directions as to how it is attached or how it comes off.

Mine is 76 EL. The bracket I need is the one the muffler mounts to. As for who did the mod's I assume it was the one who owned before me. Who ever it was just rigged it to get by.
