I stumbled across this. It is for Winnipeg but you could probably do the same where you live.

Thank you, that's good to know.
UPS gouges us up here. I use DHL or have it sent by mail.
Although many vendors don't like the extra paper work for them to send it by mail.
On some items, I have it sent to my son in North Carolina and he sends a "gift" package. "Antique auto parts" also works.

UPS is the problem, not NAFTA.
NAFTA only works one way. The cars that are built in Canada are sold cheaper in the USA than up here.

Yeah, but the drugs US companies make in the US are at least twice as expensive here as they are elsewhere.

I also do that on occasion for Canadians. I always use the US mail, but I thought this internet posting provided an interesting twist for some and might help you.

Chris,

There is obviously a topic you do not understand here.

The reason many drugs cost more here has nothing to do with production cost. It has everything to do with our FDA and patent laws and then the judicial system.

Patents only last 17 years from issue date. The patent is issued when the claims are filed and approved.

So, if ABC Drug decides to market distilled water to lighten skin tones, they have to make the patent application, and begin testing for toxicity and efficacy. The application may be approved and the patent issued, but nothing can be sold on the US market until the entire testing regime is completed. This can easily take 10 years of double blind studies and clinical trials and honestly cost in the millions. When the testing is "completed" the FDA then can take a year or more to approve the sale of the product or order additional testing. CA and EU do not require nearly as much study prior to release.

Once the drug is approved for market, then it is up to the manufacturer to try to get it in from of as many doctors as possible so they with (hopefully) write script for it.

When it finally does make it to market, if something unexpected (even after studies and trials) shows up that is damaging, there litigation can be extremely costly and take years. The funding for that possibility has to be included in the initial costs to the consumer (or his insurance carrier).

This situation is vastly different in countries with socialized medicine and government owned drug manufactures. In most of these countries there is very limited redress available for a citizen that is injured by a patented drug. Many of the drugs marketed under patent in the US are simply not available and many that are are not produced with the level of controls that the FDA requires. This is even true of those from Canada.

No, I do not own any stock in any pharmaceutical company, but at one time I did have to process vast amounts of statistical data as a consultant.

The Governments on both sides of the Border love their paperwork!

They want to know how much of what and where it came from is coming in and going out of the country. When I import something from the US I also have to certify that it is not leaving Canada in another form or product.

The Canadian Gov. also wants to collect their consumption tax (GST).

Nothing that I have imported for work, or even personally since NAFTA has been subject to any duties that I can remember.

In the EU on the other hand, the Border Stations are empty if not removed, just a sign showing the border to the next country. At least that was my experience last time I was in Europe... that is free trade.

Bush was wanting to put up a fence along the Canada/US border to keep us out, not sure if that's still in the works.

Interesting tha this has come up. I need to have a 75 pound item shipped from N.Y. State(Westbury) to Toronto. U.S.P.S can handle it but because of the weight it must go by Global Express Guaranteed and the shipping cost from Westbury to Toronto would be $292.00 !!!! YIKES. This is only a 400 Dollar item and is 30 years old(Genuine antique auto part.
I'm going to talk to UPS and DHL as almost $300 shipping is NUTS.
And I might get charge provincial and Federal tax on the item value and the shipping. Depends who processes it.

For small, light items like H.O, train parts I always ask the shipper if they will use U.S.P.S. and if not I don't buy.

Why not ship it to Buffalo, Niagara Falls, or Lewiston to General Delivery (hold at the post office). Then drive down and pick it up from there. I think USPS will take packages up to 70 pounds. I know Fed-Ex ground will take it. If they will not hold it at the post office or Fed-Ex terminal I probably can get you an address so ship it to in Buffalo. My wife is from Buffalo and still has relatives there somewhere.

Ken, I don't have a current Canadian passport and that is now a requirement for a born in Canada 3rd generation Canadian to get
across the border into the U.S.A. If I had a passport I'd use the upcoming Ontario March break to drive from Toronto to where this part is and pick it up. I'm now kicking myself that I let my passport lapse and need to add getting a new on to my "to do"
list'

Dave,
Do your application for Passport On-Line. Submit it and print it out.
Get your picture etc and goto the nearest office.

Each time I've done it on-line I get to jump the que. I was out of there in less than 10 minutes, back to the car by 15 mins!

Well If I was closer to the border I would move it for you.

How big of a rush are you in for this package and how big is it? My wife should be in Buffalo in late June. I should be in Manitoba during the second week of July but that would add several thousand miles to the trip on your package.

Thanks for mentioning the Passport. I think mine expires this year. I need to go look. You might want to look into a border crossing card. I'm not sure what that takes but it was suppose to be another easier option.

There is now an "enhanced" drivers license. It includes the same information as a passport. There is also a sticker for your car that lets you get in the fast lane. Good for frequent border crossers.

Ken, I "think" I'm going to find out what UPS or DHL would actually cost. I know it can be done with UPS but their price might be tough to bear. Did you know it's the same distance from Toronto to Winnipeg Manitoba as it is from Toronto to Atlanta Georgia ?? (I've driven both and it takes longer to get to Winnipeg because no Interstate, but arounfd the top of Lake Superior is a tremendous(sp) drive. Some time when your in Toronto I'll tell you about the near miss with the Moose and take you on a personally guided tour of the Canadian Air ansd Space Museum.

The part is an R180 case size complete diff assembly(including case)for a Datsun race car. The size diff that came in 240/260Zeds.

I knew that but I did not know if any of the Canadian provincial licenses met the "enhanced" requirement. Indiana just started issuing them Jan 2010.

Are saying some or all of the Canadian licenses meet the "enhanced" requirement?

I started to take that trip around the top of Lake Superior one time on my way home from Manitoba. I got east of Winnipeg and it was raining like crazy. I got stuck behind a truck for about a hour doing about 40. All I could get was two radio stations in French and one with some guy reading a book with a heavy British accent. I had enough and turned south and came home through International falls. I never made it to Thunder Bay. Maybe some day I'll try it again.
