Paula and I are going to a convention in Vegas Mar 6-14. We have a few extra days to see and do things but we are not gamblers.

Any suggestions of things to see and do outside of the normal touristy things. Paula has been there only once but I've been there 20 times or so..

Looking for things like Ghost towns etc. I've been on a Hummer tour that included a ghost town with a silver mine.

I've been on the dam tour and to Grand Canyon a few times.

I know I have covered most of the highlights!

thanks!

Bruce,

It may be a longer trip than you're planning, but one of our favorites in
that area was our trip to Pipe Springs National Monument and the Toroweep
Overlook area on the north rim of the canyon -- not the usual "North Rim",
but the ISOLATED area due south of Pipe Springs. It's pretty impressive to
drive near the rim, get out of your vehicle, almost immediately lay down and
look 3000' down at the Colorado River. Pipe Springs has a unique history,
to which we were exposed by the attendant. She was the wife of the Ranger
who was born there in 1937 to the first Ranger assigned there. I'm sure
they've retired by now, but the history lives on. :-)

That area gives one a much better impression of the beauty and expanse of
the country than anything on the south rim, IMHO.

Bruce,
A couple of places I recommend are Ivanpah dry lake about a half
hour south of Vegas on I 15 and Zion National park a couple of hours
north off of I 15 in Utah. The attraction at the dry lake is the land
sailing ( the world record for land sailing was set here at over 125
MPH). So much for our claim of 106 in a GMC ( GMC content) :-) The
drive to Zion is well worth it for the rock colors and formation. Be
sure and take the park blvd. drive out to the east and back.

Bruce,

We love Vegas, but I can't gamble - I have done too much statistical processing to enjoy it.

But the shows are something else - any Cirque du Soliel is worth the ticket price (~125$ last time I looked)

Have you been to Ethel M's? They make candies there that are not even legal in many states.

And the books stores.... There are three we always go to and kill at least a day at that. Academy is a small but good one and I don't remember the names of the others.

If you have a car available, there is Red Rock Canyon (pay 5$ and drive the loop all day) and Valley of Fire State Park. If you get overloaded on desert scenery, drive up to Mt. Charleston there are some really great views. You can not actually drive to the top. The neatest thing is to watch for the foliage change. It is not like a tree line where thing get shorter and short and finally nothing, this is like there is a line on the road that says "No Joshua trees allowed above this line and no Pine below". Then there is the winery in Pahrump, they make a great sherry and I you go all the way out there be sure you get to hear the history of the vineyards.

We need to get back there.

Bruce, the Cirque de Solei shows are worth the money I have seen all of them but the two MUST see shows are Mystere and "O" I have seen Mystere 6 times over 14 years and it is still the one the wife and I see when we go to Vegas. We are not gamblers but love the shows and the desert, the auto museum at one of the casinos is well worth it.

Does the Imperial Palace still have the car exhibit? I had thought new owners were selling it off years ago.

We're thinking about renting a car and checking out some ghost towns. Any good ones anyone would recommend?

Trouble with the convention is you don't know what evenings are open until you get there. Usually by the time I know the good shows are sold out!! Hopefully we will get lucky with the shows this year.

We were in Vegas over Valentine's Day and a few days afterwards, and the city is not as busy as they used to be. The economy has hit them pretty hard, and show tickets are generally available. I'm like you in that I can't see gambling as the odds are not in your favor (those hotels weren't built by the gamblers winning), so it always is a challenge to find things to do. Plenty of very nice restaurants, but none are cheap!

If you're staying at one of the big resort hotels, try checking with the concierge if you are having troubles getting tickets. It's amazing what they can sometimes arrange when it comes to finding show tickets and dinner reservations. Of course, as with everthing, at a price...............

Don't forget Carroll Shelby's shop where they produce the modified Mustangs. Right beside the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the Northeast corner of town.

Don't forget the Pawn Brokers. The pawn shop owners that are on one of the Discovery Channels. Get a picture of the Old Man for me, if you can.

We are staying in that new Aria Hotel that just opened at Christmas. Lots of bad reviews when they opened so we hope they have the kinks out by now.

Yes I have heard its slow there, but the prices don't seem to have dropped to get people there. Hopefully there will be some shows that are not sold out. We were looking at going to see Terry Fator..

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Hi Bruce,
On Flamingo Rd. you can visist The Gun Store.

http://www.thegunstorelasvegas.com/

They have 20 different hand guns and 15 different machine guns that you can
rent and fire (in the store range). One of the few places in the US that
you can do that. They have 1 of only 4 M249 S.A.W. .223 machine guns in
private hands in the US. It's lots of fun.

Thanks

Rhyolight is a ghost town near Beatty, about 100 miles NW from LV. It is a gateway to Death Valley, nice and warm and the lowest place, in elevation, in the U.S. There is also an overlook to see it. LV Chamber can clue you in.

Here is a unique trip my wife & I took last May...
We kayaked the colorado from the Base of Hoover Dam.  Very relaxing, and very calm.  We put in below the outlet tunnels on the old construction road.  Launch times are a 8:30 and 10:00AM.  The river is VERY calm.  You basically just float with the current.  Lots of historical things to see, natural beauty, hugh fish, moantain goats, hot springs, side trails to hike, caves to explore, plus all the human development activity that remains from the dam construction as well as when the City of LA daily took readings to determine flood threats.

http://www.desertriveroutfitters.com/trips.htm

On the website, Scroll down to Black Canyon.  I noticed that this year they added a "4 person minimum", not sure if that will affect you.  BLM limits the number of people on the river.  This was by far one of the most surprizing and enjoyable things I have done recently.

We loved hike Redrock Canyon, but the Black Canyon kayaking was our favorite...
