Hi there from sunny El paso. I checked out Manuels new coach in Las Cruces and it appears he is going to buy it.
The problem is the tires. The coach has steel wheels and needs tires. He is concerned the tires he buys to get home will not work when he puts Alcoas on it. Any ideas or thoughts on his tire problem. I personally am concerned about the tires on this coach and fear he may not make it home but he is also concerned about the cost and not knowing what he will need to do when he replaces the wheels
Please advise
thanks
Marcel

How far does he need to travel?
Maybe he can barrow a set of wheels and return them.
He should consider American Eagle hub centered wheels over Alcoa if
price is a consideration.

Just don't let the dilemma lead to the bad decision to try to make it on
questionable tires. Remember that the bodywork damage from a blown tire can
easily exceed the cost of new wheels & tires -- even if no accident ensues.
This is one of those times when it's too easy to be "penny wise and pound
foolish".

Marcel,
There are rent a tires in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Maybe he can rent a
set.
The damage one blowout can do can cost a whole lot more the 6 tires.

Were you able to read the date codes, Marcel?
The photos Manuel sent me didn't show the codes well enough, even with

It shouldn't be a problem to go that far on old tires as long as he doesn't go too fast, say like over 20mph.

Just under 1,400 miles

Tires will blow on cool day under 55 mph within 6 miles of the place trying to sell coach. AND tires will blow within 140 miles of sellers house on a 90 degree day at 60 mph. both happened to me. Second instance was 6 yr old tire which just came back from Florida to PA 2 weeks earlier and this coach was used a lot.

Dave,

I don't know how deep his pockets still are after buying the coach, but if he needs new tires anyway(either 16" or 16.5"), all we are looking at extra is the cost of the alum wheels.
If the funds are still existing to cover new wheels, I'd do it before I move the coach. It hurts to do, but protects the investment in the coach. 100 years from now it won't hurt so bad.

I do not trust old tires and will not have tires over 5 years old on our coach. I have seen the damage on other coaches. I try to learn from others. If it were going to be mine, I would have Jim K ship 6 wheels to Las Cruces and then get new tires. He will not make it home if Marcel has any question at all about the tires. Just what I think.

He is planning to take I-10. At 20mph he will be running approximately 70
mph slower than the rest...that could be dangerous and will get him a
citation or 3.

If Manuel headed for Fredericksburg, TX from El P and took the US hwys he
would do better. I once drove from Delray Beach, FL to Fredericksburg
without entering an Interstate hwy. It slows one down a lot so you get
to see and smell the roses! Less strain on man and machine.

Unless Manuel is on a plane enroute to EL P he may be reading your words

Or, he could buy wheels and tires first. Then move the coach.

Marcel,
Go to the mens mall and get 6 rims from a '90s Dodge 1 ton (make sure they're domed) ($30 or $40 each), and the nuts if needed.

The rims are not hub centered, but are of the right configuration 16" x 6", and 8 x 6.5 bolt pattern. Then transfer the tires.

That should take you home.

I have six 16.5" wheels and tires (date code unknown). They have been loaned out 4 times to transport coaches. If he was local he could borrow them. The last time they were used was last summer for an 1800 mile trip.

Marcel,
If you are concerned, then he should be too. If the buyer can't
afford tires and wheels, then he can't afford the coach.

I don't think anyone wants to put on 6 new 16.5 tires and drive 1400 miles
to remove them and then put on new Alcoas and 16" tires.

What the hell....common sense can go a little too far....make a run for
it...
