hey guys and gals;
Caught the edge of the thread last week about the fold away table. looked at some of the pics, but didn't see the one that was talked about a few years back with the curved wooden main support and the framework that allowed it to be stowed vertically against the footboard of the sofa.
anyone recall that?
I've got an acquaintance who is a dynamite wood guy that I'd love to show that to to see if I can persuade him to take a stab at producing the works for that table.
does anyone recall that particular unit?
Scott '74 Glacier Orillia, ON, Canada

Sounds like my son. In 1977, he was fascinated with combination locks and
soon learned to pick them. Then he had to have a project for high school
wood shop so proposed to build such a lock. Since the shop instruction
insisted he couldn't, he did. Beautifully finished thing made of solid
walnut, with perfect proportions, and fully functional -- without a piece of
metal in it. He DID get an an A (one of only a few for a brilliant kid who
hated school starting in Pre-K).
He's now a computer consultant with two brilliant home-schooled Boy Scouts
of his own, and a GMC MH to haul them to "educational opportunities" all
over the country. :-) VVVGB!

I saw that table at the Dover Delaware convention. Perhaps if you contact
some of the east coast chapters they could help locate it.

Hi Jim/all;
I'm going to talk to my friend Brian the furniture maker this week, I hope and give him a link to all the photo's y'all sent.
will have to make a few assumptions as to the length and width of the table and the height of it once deployed.
Once Brian has had a chance to have a look and tell me what he thinks, I'll report back as to whether or not multiple copies are worthwhile both for him and for the community.
may take a couple of weeks, but I'll let y'all know once I do.

I suspect there is a market outside the GMC community. In fact, there might be demand outside the RV community... I would like a table like this on my couch in my living room! (Price would be a factor... )

Scott,
Please keep me posted. If I had plans & specifications, I can out source
this into Reynosa or Monterrey, Mexico. We have clients with craftsmen and
capacity to manufacture these tables. I don't know if it would be any
cheaper or better quality. We would have to evaluate that.

I can pretty much guarantee he would be glad to make more than one. Just the tooling and process setup to make that curved beam will be interesting. I know exactly how I would do it and it would not be inexpensive at all. It is the same process we used to use to make molded plywood boats (and were used for DeHavlend Mosquitos).

My knowledge of wood working and fabrication will be apparent (but that
never stopped me before). Wondering though, why would the curved piece have
to be wood? Could it be aluminum tubing? Would that be any easier - cheaper?
Just as good?

That's why you make it a kit (like IKEA) to avoid liability. You're not selling a table, you're selling pieces of wood.
