My experience was quite different. I painted the 3/4" marine plywood
with several coats of exterior oil based paint even painting the holes
for the bolts. Within 3-4 years I had to pull it out due to
deterioration. I bought some 3/8th inch diamond plate from the recycle
yard and cut out a piece to fill the entire area, using my original
template. It held a battery and a plastic industrial tub that held 12 qts
of oil/tranny fluid.
I used the rest of the diamond plate as a base for my slideout for the
pair of 6V batteries in the rear.

Gary, Ken, Mike, Emery and David,
Thanks you for the advise on this. I have some great ideas and I will begin work this weekend. I might try some new ideas as well. I run our family business and we manufacture rubber sheeting, belting and rubber caulks. These are all "overkill" for commercial applications but I am pretty sure I can dip coat some cheap carbon steel and "my tray" will last longer than most all of us.
Thanks again for all the insight and great ideas!
