Miguel and Ryan finished our coach about 3 pm. We took it for a 30-35 mile ride, Miguel and me. All seems good. We will leave here early in the morning. The tracker is on for those that want to see us hit the road. I anticipate no problems. I still believe that ring was busted in the old engine for many miles.
Could not have had better service. Miguel, Manny, and Jim K. worked together and took very good care of us. Folks are very fortunate to live close to one of our GMC shops. Life is great.
See all of you in Montgomery very soon.
Dan

Ok Jim. Miguel told me to change it when we get to Arizona, 500 miles. I will do that.

Dan,

I'd suggest you empty one of your Moonshine jugs and fill it with oil. ;-)

Order a Blackstone Labs Test kit and have it sent to one of the GMCMI
members in Texas that will be attending the Montgomery Convention.

Blackstone will send you the kit FOC; there is NO CHARGE until they analyze
the sample.

You can transfer the oil into the test kit at Montgomery.

Rob, good idea. I will save some of the 500 mile break in oil. Email me when you can and tell me how to get the kit. I had Miguel look close at my spray from the injectors. They looked good. It runs real smooth and Manny seems to have done his usual great job on this transmission. Teri will drive the car for the first 80 miles, or so, before we tie it on.

Steve,

Dan will be on the road from the time he leaves California until he gets to
Montgomery. I figured he wouldn't be staying in any one place long enough to
get a kit mailed to him.

Sending the kit to someone from Texas who could bring the kit to him at the
convention would be the easiest way for him to get his hands on the kit.

He could transfer oil from his Moonshine jar into the kit and then mail it
to Blackstone from the convention.

Dan,
If you're following this, I have extra kits. If you're still in the
area for the GMCWS rally in Auburn, you can be one of the volunteers
to have this performed free and get the results prior to the end of
the rally.

Dan and Teri are at about 4600 ft right now.

I wonder how the new engine pulls up those hills compared to the old one.

Why would you want to analyze break-in oil? You know it's gonna have a bunch of stuff in it, as it should (compared to a broken-in engine). I'd be more interested in the regular oil at 3000-6000 miles.

Run the engine at sustained RPM (versus short trips) and you should have a well-broken in engine.

Thanks for riding along with us today. The new engine ran like a top. Used 2 quarts of oil in 550 miles. I guess that will slack off. No gauges or speedometer. Did have tranny pan gauge and oil pressure. Could not see water temp. Will see if I can get them all working later this week. Engine pulled great and the transmission worked like it was supposed to. I thought the pain fluid ran a little hot at times, up to 230 going over Superior/Globe. I have not installed my external trans. cooler yet. That will cool it back down.
Anyway, we are here in Duncan. Left about 6 am Ca time and got here about 5 Ca. time.

Good news Dan. Glad to hear you made it safely.
Did you unhook the Vibe for the climb up the mountain?
How does the new engine's power compare to the old one?
Are the guage/speedo problems just a matter of not being hooked up? Should be an easy fix. I would guess the oil consumption will settle down once the rings are seated.

Randy,

FYI below you will find a query I sent to Blackstone and their response.

Here's a link to their website:

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

The sample costs $22.50 plus postage.

Regards,
Rob

G'day,

I received the following response from Blackstone Labs:

Quote:

Rob: Thanks for the e-mail. Changing the oil at 500 miles is a good idea and
that would also be a good point to get a sample. There will be a lot of
excess wear and silicon in that sample, though it will also be the "high
water mark" for wear. Everything should look better after that and if it
doesn't, then it's possible a problem may exist. Also, I'll pass this
e-mail on to Kristin. She's the website guru and we may just add this info
to the FAQ.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Sincerely,
Ryan Stark

Subject: [GMCnet] Oil Sampling

G’day,

With all the discussion about Dan’s engine I just sent the message in to
Blackstone Labs.

I just installed a rebuilt engine in my GMC Motorhome and I would like to
know when I should take the first oil sample? I have been instructed to
drive the vehicle about 500 miles then change the oil and filter. I was told
that was because a newly rebuilt engine will generate a lot of "stuff"
during the break in process. I would assume that it's not worth it to send
in a sample of the 500 mile oil? After the 500 mile oil and filter change I
will start the normal oil change cycle of 3000 miles and send in a sample
from that change for a base line. Comments please. Thank you, Rob PS - It
might be a good idea to include your response on your FAQ page.

Regards,
Rob Mueller

Thanks for asking them, but I disagree with their thinking. I would do regular samples (every other change) and watch for a trend rather than get a sample that is off the charts, just to know what off the charts looks like.

I did oil analysis on my airplane engines and the types of metals found gave you a map to look for developing trouble. Breaking in an air-cooled engine was a little bit of a problem in that you wanted to run it on the ground the minimum time possible to avoid high CHT's, but you also wanted to make sure all the bugs were worked out before taking it up. I got the "pleasure" of taking up a twin on a test flight after a double engine overhaul. Get in and run it at 85% power or so for an hour within gliding distance of the airport. Lotta circles!

It one thing that costs 20 bucks that's worth alot more than 20 bucks!
