I see from Gene's site, the lateral play of the bogie on the pin is 1/8" max. If it's over that, do you use a thrust washer(s) to take up the slack? Are there supposed to be washers there now to prevent this play. Is it a huge job to put washers in? Do they go on the inside or outside? Is all of this information somewhere and I missed it?

I checked the GMC Parts Book Page 14-2 & 14-3 and it appears that Key #12 is
listed as Spacer - Pin and Key #14 is listed as a PACK ASSY - trust. No
washers or shims listed to take up end play.
Maintenance Manual X-7525 Section 4 page 4-8 to 4-11 details CONTROL ARM
REMOVAL and page 4-27 to 4-29 detail CONTROL ARM INSTALLATION.
No further information in the supplements X-7625 for 1977 and X-7725 for
1978.
Unfortunately it does not detail the replacement of the control arm
bushings.

John,
IMHO, the maintenance manuals' descriptions of rear suspension pin
maintenance is TERRIBLE. But there is a clue there to your problem. In
X-7525, page 4-28, the following step is provided:

5 . Tighten control arm lock nuts until hat section
spacers are firmly seated, then back off nut until
control arm moves freely, and retorque nuts to 15-20
ft . lbs.
-----------------------------------------------------------
What that means is that the "top hats" (known as "hat sections" in the
manual) are adjustable to take up the lateral (sliding) clearance at the
pivot pins. Do not expect it to be easy to tighten the retaining nuts
enough to move the top hats -- they're probably tightly corroded into the
"bogie". It's been lots of years since I had them out, and having the
Harrison 4-bag system complicates the problem, but I think I'd remove the
nuts and washers (if any), and devise a driver to contact only the exposed
end of the top hat. A big hammer on the driver would probably work better
than a wrench. Kroil or ATF+acetone might help.

Over torque the nut to 35ft lbs the back off and go to 30 and see if
it will tahe out the movement.
