Chris,

I did a bit of poking around the ADEQ website but couldn't find what kind of
report they provide.

I was wondering if the info provided can help you tune the GMC?

Hi Rob,

Here is the data from today:
Loaded Result PASS
HC Idle
HC Idle Result PASS
HC Score In PPM 58 HC Idle Std 350
CO Idle
CO Idle Result PASS
CO Score In % 0.10 CO Idle Std 4.00
HC Loaded
HC Loaded Result PASS
HC Score In PPM 24 HC Loaded Std 350
CO Loaded
CO Loaded Result PASS
CO Score In % 0.08 CO Loaded Std 3.00

Std is the limit, the number before it is actual. I failed initial today, but there was no line, the coach was cold, and i had my air filter installed. A little trick to keeping the HC down is take the air filter out before you get there. the engine will breathe better. the initial was 387. so taking the filter out and upping the idle to a smoother idle in Drive gave me a 329 point drop in HC.The PCV valve was loose Rolling Eyes on the second run too.

I do know my coach runs a bit rich. I will be sending the Carb to Dick soon, so soon I'll have a proper running carb. My coach also has California Emissions controls.

As you can see the numbers are in the "pass with flying colors" categories. Amazing numbers, really, for an old clunker with 113K miles on it and no cat's.

All, If you know the VIN of a vehicle that you are looking at in Arizona, you can get the history at the ADEQ website.
hope this is helpful.

Hi Chris,

My HC was high and I corrected it by adjusting the carb, using the lean drop method as described in the 76 manual. It is easier than r&r carb.

Chri$: you can replace the pump with the carb on the coach. Spray carb cleaner thru the nozles from the inside, & drop in a new pump. tap the lever pivot pin in just far enough to get the arm off. Don`t tap it all the way to the housing so you can use a screwdriver to push it back. The choke rod can be re-hooked from the top with a flshlight and bifocals. I use an old speaker magnet on the valvecover to keep parts on.

No, all you know is you have $19 less every year to spend on tuning your GMC.

I wrote both my state congressmen asking them to reconsider the annual emissions testing requirement, as they do with classic cars (which are eligible due to the classic car insurance they must carry and it's mileage limits). Since no classic motorhome insurance is available, we're stuck taking it in every year and playing emission roulette.

How many coaches are left to rot because the cost to bring them into compliance (even if that cost is unknown, but assumed to be prohibitive)?

Emissions testing is headed our way Randy. It won't be long before
the environmental Nazis make it this far south. You need a friend,
son, or daughter in a compliant area to co-own the GMC so you can
register it there and don't have to put up with that nonsense and
expense.

Rob,
Used to was that the testing was done at idle, then at a given high
rpm. The testing is now done on a chassis dyno while under load. A
condition where most engines are at their dirtiest, sort of like when
you are accelerating on an on-ramp or to pass a vehicle. Mains are
all in as is the power circuit. We're talking 40 yr old stuff here
that has to work as it did when new. But wait, there's more. You
must first pass the visual and anything not working or missing is an
instant fail. That means two charcoal cannisters on some coaches, a
working PCV valve, TVS, heat riser, Thermac valve on the air cleaner
etc. 40 years ago the fuel was different too so there's lots of
variables that can pass or fail a coach. Sure, there's lots of
testing stations that have employees that in some cases aren't sure of
what they're looking at but that shouldn't be a variable.
Plenty of properly tuned GMCs pass. In CA, if yours doesn't pass,
you have four tests, 6 mos apart in which it must pass or be scrapped,
or sold out of state. Just try selling a gross polluter vehicle in
some states. They are electronicallly tagged at the CA DMV.

Guys, the inspection for a vehicle this year with a GVW over 8500 is very simple. They check the vin, put the hose on and start the test. they never look under the hatch, and I think they only checked the gas cap once a few years ago. They never check the loose PCV valves or anything like that. Rolling Eyes

It actually runs cleaner under load, and a high idle speed new or no air filter in the can helps at idle. they run at 40mph for about 2 min, then the idle test is performed, so the test is engineered to test at proper engine temps and pass more cars.

If I ever get to the point that it will not pass, my backup is my mom's address in Sedona! Twisted Evil

If you fail, you can go into the office and they give you some advice (This is where I learned about the air filter thing when my 1987 carbureted mitsubishi truck failed)

There is also the advanced emissions center that they send you to after you spend ~$700 and still fail.

Chris,
You can't always count on a "relaxed" visual inspection. If someone
held the huge fines these stations pay for violations over my head,
you can bet I'd do it right. That's a good point you brought up, an
engine heat soaked thoroughly up to operating temps will pass better
than one that was just driven a short distance to the testing
facility. The reformulated fuels do burn cleaner.

I don't think they are even required to check under the hood for anything on a 1978 or older truck. I recall that we had a 1978 F250 with a 351W that ran on regular leaded gas, 1978 was the last year for it, and these coaches probably did too. they have to pass a test for a leaded fuel vehicle, hence no underhood inspection.

Randy, did they look under your hatch?
