Wally Edwards shared that an d a lot of other early GMC motorhome stories
at a
Sunshine Statesmen rally I hosted at Orange Lake, FL several years ago.
Many on the Net were there and
I'm surely they found Wally's stories as fascinating as I did.

He had a 1978 Kingsley at the time and hadn't used it for many years but
when he accepted my
invitation, he sent it to Cinnabar to make it road ready! Manyof the GM
people involved in motorhome
design and production are getting up in years and should be sought out so
we can memorialize their stories.
Bill Bryant has done a super job in this area over the years.

I am still trying to connect with someone who was in Engineering Records
(as we called it at IBM) at T & C who can
explain how the VINs were issued and a gazillion other questions.

David,
I wish I could help you with that. It's going to be tough, as you point out, a lot of the people from the day are getting up there, and even on current production stuff, it always seemed like tough questions to get answered. The headcount reductions in the mid-90's led to a lot of that information (and people) disappearing, as it wasn't viewed as "real" engineering responsibility. Then, the people remaining were spread very thin and constantly reorganized which hasn't helped the documentation at all.

Ex GM designer Gary Smith has an Historic American Automobile Industry styling website called "Deans Garage" and he seems to stay in touch with alot of the retired surviving GM designers from the 70's/ 80's so it may be worthwhile asking him to put you in touch with the relevant people who worked on the styling of the motorhome.
Designer Michael lathers isnt listed on his website presently, but one of the others may be.

Michael Lathers was the Chief Designer, GM Design Staff for the GMC Motorhome and is the person to talk with. There are a couple of other talented designers I have talked with as well that reported to Michael and was always impressed by their talent. We have talked extensively about his design and mentioned many of those details in my GMC MH history. Michael gave us a great seminar at the GMCMI Rayne, LA convention several years ago, he also appears in one of the GMC MH Showroom films along with a number of the other movers and shakers important to the motorhomes design.
