Hi all,
I know this subject has come up before and I have an idea of what can be used from a salvaged Tornado. I have a friend who has a friend (of course) and he has two Tornados that he wants to scrap out. Not sure of the years but they both have 455's. My question is has anyone every put together a complete list of what can be salvaged from a Tornado to be used on a GMC? I'm thinking engine and trans but what about the hubs, control arms and so on?

Jon,
Here's some differences:
1) Toronado carb is not the same as a GMC
2) Lower control arms will require "beefing up"
3) The hubs have 5 studs for the wheels the GMC has 8
4) I THINK the lower ball joints have a different taper and the knuckles
would need to be re-worked
5) If the Toronados are 1967 or 1968 they will have switch pitch
transmissions
6) If the Toronados are 1967 or 1968 they will have a 3.21 to 1 planetary
gear final drive
7) If the Toronados are 1967 or 1968 the passenger side final drive
extension shaft is different
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

jon;
more to the point, the knuckles are the same but for the diameter of the taper for the lower ball joint.
the CV joints themselves on the half shafts are interchangeable with motorhome units.
It's the 1966 model year that had the switch pitch. that may extend to some early 67's.
on Gene Fisher's site at one time, i beleive there was a 'how to' to reinforce the lower control arms for motorhome use.

What Rob said!
If the car has drum brakes, the knuckles cannot be used for the GMC.
The control arms can be upgraded to equal the motorhome strength. The
air cleaner is a keeper, as are the exhaust and intake mainfolds.
