G’day,
In light of Dan’s recent experience and in preparation of our upcoming USA
tour I went to the Good Sam website and downloaded the brochure on Emergency
Roadside Assistance & RV Towing.
Here’s what it says about towing (the CAPS are mine!):
TOWING SERVICE
Our 24-hour, 365-days-a-year dispatch center is available with one toll-free
call. There are no pre-set mileage or dollar limits. When you call for
service, Good Sam RV ERS pays 100% of the towing fees for the delivery of
your vehicle to the NEAREST INDEPENDENT PROFESSIONAL SERVICE CENTER.
However, you must request disablement assistance through our telephone
dispatch center within 24 hours of the disablement. IF YOU MAKE ANY REQUEST
FOR YOUR VEHICLE TO BE TAKEN TO A LOCATION OTHER THAN THE NEAREST
PROFESSIONAL SERVICE CENTER, THE MILEAGE FEE (FOR THE EXTRA DISTANCE ONLY)
WILL BE AT YOUR EXPENSE.
If you request to be towed to a location other than the nearest professional
service center, you will not be entitled to a secondary tow for the same
disablement. A request for a tow to your home would also require additional
payment if that distance exceeds the distance to the nearest professional
service center.
Note that service providers and facilities referred to members by Affinity
Road & Travel Club, Inc. (ART) are independent businesses neither owned;
controlled nor operated by ART. THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR DAMAGE, LOSS, OR
UNSATISFACTORY WORKMANSHIP LIES SOLELY WITH THE SERVICE PROVIDERS AND
FACILITIES PROVIDING THE SERVICE, RATHER THAN WITH ART. Subject to the
provisions of this brochure, towing services are also provided for
membership-owned vehicles which become disabled as a result of a collision.
Note: Fees for services that you hire on your own are not reimbursable.
The statement "NEAREST INDEPENDENT PROFESSIONAL SERVICE CENTER" is wide open
for interpretation! For the hell of it I'm going to contact GS and see if I
can get a detailed definition of that statement.
Furthermore considering the statement; "THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR DAMAGE, LOSS,
OR UNSATISFACTORY WORKMANSHIP LIES SOLELY WITH THE SERVICE PROVIDERS AND
FACILITIES PROVIDING THE SERVICE, RATHER THAN WITH ART." Perhaps ART should
change their name to Pontius Pilot Road & Travel Club, Inc.! ;-)
While I am a member of Good Sam I did not realize that am not a member and
do not have the actual policy to review.
I have sent the following email to Good Sam ERS.
Hi, I own a classic 1975 GMC Avion Motorhome on which I spent a great deal
of time and money restoring. I am considering membership, however, I note
that according to your brochure if my GMC requires towing I would be taken
to the "nearest independent professional service center." Could you please
provide detailed information on or examples of what Good Sam defines as an
"independent professional service center." Thank you, Rob

Rob,
A key issue here is not "A professional service center", but rather
the timeliness of the rapairs. If you want to prompt Good Sam to make
an improvement in the scope of coverage, it should include a statement
that the repairs be made within a reasonable time frame. They could
not even get to Dan's coach for at least one month. With that in
writing, I would use it to beat up Good Sam. My only beef with GS is
the one time I called, I was put on "forever hold". My vehicle was a
hazard to traffic and after being cut off, then being put on "forever
hold again", I hung up and called an independent. I submitted the
bill with the above statement and was fully reimbursed.
An engine diagnosis, is not magic. GMC engine R&R is not magic either
and most any professional repair facilities should be able to do it.
Pretty basic stuff IMHO. We've witnessed here where many
non-professional, shade tree guys, have swapped out their engines
successfully.
I don't think Dan is going to get any satisfaction on the towing bill
based on the type of facility required for working on a GMC. A time
to repair based complaint, may have merit though. I would also check
for a business license and all the other things necessary to be an
independent professional repair facility. This may be something we
want to watch.

I recall a similar discussion a few years ago; It seems the magic (coverage granting) words were "the nearest QUALIFIED repair facility". That is, someone who's actually worked on a # of GMCs in the recent past.
I believe certain of the road service contracts have that magic wording.

I had a transmission failure last fall. (Not so) good sam was only willing
to tow to a local shop THEY said was qualified (apparently they work from a
list). If their guy couldn't handle the job sam said they'd then take it to
someone else. Again, their choice. Ken Frey was 90 miles away and the only
guy in the area I knew of who could handle it but sam said "no dice".
I'm no longer with (not so) good sam.

No. I paid roughly $450 to have it towed to Ken Frey.

Several have said AAA will tow a total of 400 miles if you have their RV
policy. Anyone comment?

Glenn,
I just got off the phone with AAA. I have a AAA membership with the PLUS RV option. They will tow you anywhere up to a max.
of 100 miles. ....and you can use them up to 4 times a year.
In addition, my policy on the GMC with Progressive has a rodeside labor and towing clause which pays $500.

Jim: I also have AAA PLUS RV @$170 year. Same as you. They also offer AAA Premier RV @$200 a year. It is the same 4 tows of 100 miles to destination of your choice except it offers one tow of up to 200 miles free per member per membership year. I was told by AAA that both also cover a trailer that I might be pulling.
