G’day,
The messages discussing the mileage between trans fluid changes got me to
thinking (smell the wood burning?) I reckon that having an external filter
on the trans might not be a bad idea. To see where the best place to install
it I wanted to check the oil flow paths. I checked Maintenance Manual X-7525
– Nothing. I checked MM X-7625 – Nothing. I checked MM X-7725 – Nothing! I
have a copy of the 1967 Oldsmobile manual and found it in there.
From what I can tell the fluid enters the filter in the sump, goes to the
pump and from the pump to the pressure regulating valve. There are two
outlets on the pressure regulating valve, on goes to the torque converter
the second to several other components in the transmission.
The two lines that go to/from the cooler are labeled “LUBE” and “CONVERTER
RETURN.” One would assume that “CONVERTER RETURN” is the line from the
cooler so “LUBE” is to the cooler.
I think that if you were to add an external filter that it would be best to
put it in the “LUBE” line to the cooler because if you did have a trans
failure it would keep a lot of crap from getting to the cooler.
Comments please.

I don't know what yo'u would gain from an extertnal filter on a transmission. The only concern is temperature of the fluid, there is no blow-by, no fuel washing down the cylinders, etc., like with engine oil. Transmission fluid generally can go much, much longer than engine oil and the filter generally just catches those metalic bits that get sucked up from the sump.
I'm talking out my ear, so please correct me if I'm totally wrong. This opinion comes from auto shop class in high school, what, 35 years ago?

Was it a 'stock item' on any of the models?

The outside filter was not a standard item on a new coach. I put mine on the cooler discharge just because it was convenient. Installing it on the cooler inlet line would be better since it would catch any junk coming through if you have a transmission failure. If you ever have a transmission failure then you must clean out the cooler diligently! If you don't, the transmission will not last long. When mine failed I was only 10 miles from the Bean Station Dixielander rally and two people took over the job of cleaning the cooler. They ran several cans of brake cleaner through the cooler before it came out clear. It was amazing the amount of junk that was in the cooler and lines. Putting a filter in the cooler discharge after a transmission failure is a great idea to prevent anything getting to the transmission. If you ever have a transmission failure do it close to the Bean Station Rally because you are going to get a lot of expert help. They even had a rebuilt transmission there ready to put in.

Rob,
I have had this filter installed since 2001. You can find these remote
filter bases at most autoparts stores or from Jeg's or Summit. It is on the
line out of the transmission to the cooler. I had forgot that I posted
these pictures a number of years ago.

This is the one that I bought a long time ago.

Ron,
IMHO a filter in the inlet to the cooler should catch metal particles coming
from a trans that had failed but just in case it didn't catch them all I
would still flush the cooler, lines, and filter housing in addition to
replacing the filter.

Just replace the transmission filter if you have a failure. Not an
expensive item and costs less than pulling yet another transmission.
Our Danny Dunn transmission (Is he still around?)and the cooler my
transmssion never gets anywhere near hot.
