The oil pressure kept dropping so I pulled into a truck stop. Now, anyone know where I should be towed? Id like a place that could do what it will take. Something has happened to the engine.
Thanks,
Dan

Well, we will be towed back to Quartzsite. Not my choice but that is where Good Sam found someone that said they can do major engine work.

Dan ,

I'm no help on where to go ... won't be long thou ... someone will chime in
:)

Did the engine make noises as it lost OP or was it just a guage indication
that you saw ? Obviously hoping for a bad sender ... assuming electrical
guage .

J.D.

Try to get them to tow you to Miguel Mendez's shop in Upland, Ca. area.

He suggests that you ask some questions of shop doing work. Like, how many GMC'S have they worked on in last year. How many engine rebuilds, how many 455's. Do they have equipment to pull engine out of your coach?

Check with Miguel 909-2297508 or 909-982-7747. I doubt there is anyone in Quartzsite that regularly works on GMC's.

Thanks.
I have been on fone with both Jim K and Miguel. Will see what a towing bill will be to Miguel's place after I argue with Good Sam.

DAN,
Don't let Good Sam try to force you to take your GMC to some place you aren't sure of. They tried that with us when we lost the motor in Pa. The out come for us was we had it towed to our house (250) miles. Good Sam agreed to paid for the first 150 miles and we paid the rest. After we got home we had the tow company send us a bill for towing to their shop from where we broke down. This we sent to our insurance company. Our insurance company paid this amount under our Road Service rider.
Good Luck

Thanks.
I have been on fone with both Jim K and Miguel. Will see what a towing bill will be to Miguel's place after I argue with Good Sam.

Dan,

Although they rarely fail, maybe you'll get lucky and It is just your oil pump or oil pump drive. The collapsed lifter problem (if that's what it was) would indicate some kind of oil pressure problem. It will still be kind of a major repair. You did the right thing by stopping before further damage to the crankshaft could occur. How much oil pressure did you have before you decided to shut it down? As I'm sure you know, the general rule of thumb is ten PSI for every 1000 RPMs.

When I first put the Buick V-6 in my '53 Jeep, it had scarily low oil pressure. Dropped to below 10 PSI at idle and wasn't as high as I would have liked to see it at speed. I ran it that way for a couple thousand miles and when I rebuilt it, the machinist checked and polished the crank and said to run standard size bearings in it. It turned out that the rear main bearing had been eroded form sitting with old oil in it for a long period before I resurrected the engine to put in my Jeep. It's been fine ever since, and I beat it half to death when I run it in the sand dunes.

Hopefully you can get a tow to Miguel's. If you need to stay in Tucson for a couple of days, our guest room is ready

They sent a roll back that was too short. Good Sam's would not authorize a larger truck. Now we are sitting here at the truckstop. I keep getting put on hold and the line drops after 15-20 minutes.
Thanks Jim. I have a 750 limit on my car ins that will pay that much. Maybe Good Sam will agree to get me something that will at least get us back to Q. Or, we will sleep here. Not like I dont have facilities, and the sun shines really good on the panels. We have not run the generator in over a week and that was just to exercise it.
so, we sit, we wait. Good Sam will have to do something as the other truck has left.
Thanks to all, I would like to get it to Miguel someway. Jim K. has an engine for us.

Carl,
That might just be a good guess now that I 'm thinking about it a
little. He also dropped vacuum and I was a bit puzzled about that
because I kept thinking it was a spun rod bearing. I couldn't tie
that to a spun rod bearing. When I talked to Dan in Q he indicated
that it was coming and going and he didn't define it as a knock, more
like a lifter collapsing. I bet you're right on this one and Dan
won't have to buy a new engine. Heckuva lot easier fix too.

Thanks for all replies, emails, and phone calls. First wrecker could not do the job. Flatbed is on its way now to take us right back to Quartzsite. I would rather be at Miguel's. Will see what that tow bill costs when the truck gets here. If I can afford it we will go to Miguel's. Have talked with both Miguel and Jim K. on the phone. It might be a lifter but when I saw the oil pressure dropping I started lookg to get off the interstate. It would not make any noise when Manny would come listen to it. Made a noise last night but stopped. Did not make noise this morning til I hit my brakes in town. 30 seconds, noise stopped.
Oh well, that's enough. Teri and I are safe in a truckstop and we have her car. Life is good, as Arch always said.
Dan

Dan, at least it is somewhat more pleasant there than if you had been at home. I logged an hour on the snowblower this morning. I know Poplar Bluff got a lot of snow so I assume Dexter did as well.

Sorry about your dilemma. Wish I could help. I will follow your situation and pray for the best.

Ok Larry, thanks. We are still waiting on the second tow. Flatbed is coming this time to take us back to Q. We are safe so we are fine. I do appreciate everyone that has communicated with us in one fashion or another. I just took a shower so I feel much better now. I saw some pictures of snow in Dexter. I think they have 6 inches. Hope my Vdub is ok. Very Happy
It is amazing the calming effect one gets from folks' communications when problems arise. Got to get this thing rolling so we don't miss Montgomery. Maybe I can get my transmission leak fixed now.

Dan..
I hope it's not another spun rod bearing.. Too many of those..
How old is the engine? What a fix to be in while on the road!
Can't give you much more than "moral" support from here..

Hi All

Having a choice in trans Lube.. I just had the lube in the 5 speed
Ford Bronco 2 Changed and put in Dextron lube. Now I find out that the
manual calls for SAE 80 W. Should I drain the D
Textron out and put in 80 w --or is there that much difference???

Advice needed
