The February 2010 issue of Highways magazine has a recall notice on the Carrier A/C units with heater assemblies.

The affected units have serial numbers ranging from 1807Y ( 18th week of 2007 ) through 3009Y ( 30th week of 2009 ).

Carrier's contact number is 877-584-7059.

I have one of the affected units and contacted Carrier.

I gave them the serial number and model number. They are sending me a replacement part with instructions for making the repair.

I was also told that if I don't feel comfortable making the repair, they would send someone out to make the repair at no cost.

Larry,

I received my replacement element last week & it took me 15 min. to replace
it. As of Dec. 09 Carrier no longer makes RV A/C units. I installed mine in
late Oct 2009. Bad timing on my part.

I confirmed that Carrier is in fact not going to make RV air conditioners. I called their customer service and was told there is no information about the future possibility of them getting back into RV air.
Sometimes putting things off, pays off. I was considering whether to buy a new air conditioner before the change away from R-22 as of 2010. Not being able to make a decision based on information, I took the easy way out and did nothing. I was quite sure though that I would buy a Carrier based on opinions of fellow GMCers. I will most likely now buy a Penguin from Dometic. I did not ask Carrier about future support of their units but I suspect that they will do so for quite some time.
It is hard to imagine that I would be thinking about air conditioners today. It was -5 F this morning. Now as of 1:30 pm it is a blistering 14. Global warming is here.

Guess who is one of the people that caused the recall??
I bought a low profile 15k to replace the Coleman that made getting into my barn a serious problem.
I got the unit installed spring of '08 and used it for a while, and in the early fall we were someplace chilly and I the APU was already online so What the Hay - I fired up the heat strip - I had used it a few times (like maybe two) before, but this time it suddenly blew out sparks and the APU unloaded......
So, I called Family RV and said I had a warranty issue and they indicated that I was not alone and asked could I send all the particulars and they would ship a replacement as soon as it was available. They did, this one works - at least three of the nights with GMCES in Elkhart.

Does this include heat pumps?

I am not sure on the heat pump question.

I suggest that you check with Carrier. Call the number and provide your model and serial number.

I received the replacement heat strip from Carrier and installed it into the Carrier A/C, fired up it up and no heat. I installed the original heat strip and it worked fine.

I called Carrier and explained the problem and they sent out a new replacement heat strip. I installed it and got heat out of the unit.

We took the coach for a short trip to northern Indiana last weekend and the replacement heat strip did not seem to be operating as hot as the original heat strip.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Tomorrow morning, I plan to check the ambient temperature and the temperature of the air coming out of the unit with the new strip installed and then try it with the original.

I'll post the results tomorrow evening.

Larry,
Did you check the thermal safety on the first replacement?
Mine was tripped when the part arrived. These things can sometimes trip from a mechanical shock. It may be just fine.

I can't compare the original and the replacement. The original blew out before I had any chance to get accustom to its operation.

I was one of the first to get the new heater under warranty about a year ago and it has been just fine. We ran it a lot at the Elkhart rally.
