I don't care much for his rear end conversion, but just look at the dash
farther down the page!:

Ken,

Wow, that is one good looking dash!

I wonder why they put the "kick" in the ramp. I'm probably wrong but it sure
looks like it would cause problems if I tried to drive my 1988 Heritage
Softail (~6" from the ground to the bottom of the frame) into the back.

OOPS, never mind, I just noticed in the photos that it appears the rear
suspension is WAY high!

And then you have Randy & Joe Johnson (the Johnson boys) at Columbia SD that are doing this to haul Randys mini's.

I wonder how hard it would be to make a fiberglass mold from it. (Our if they would allow it.)

Would the demand be enough to justify making fiberglass dash kits?

You could ask Frank Jenkins. He's had a mold and has made fiberglass
replicas of the OEM dash for many years. His sales quantity would at least
be an indication of how many one might expect to sell.

Anyone attempting such an endeavor would probably be well-advised to
collaborate with "Mac" McNeil on a complete kit including the dash,
instruments and wiring.

Nahh, Some of us like to invent our own pain. It's part of the fun.

It is really a shame that GM didn't use better materials in the Dash, though. Cars from that Era didn't have all that ABS, they used a lot of Polyethelene, which had it's own problems, but I think it lasts longer (except in direct sunlight). There were much better dash designs back then too...

I had several Chev Caprice wagons from 70 and 80 s and they were blessed
with the same material and problems.

Chris,

Considering the size of the GMC's windshield I'd say Polyethelene would have
had problems, would it not?

Maybe so, Maybe not. Too bad these dashboards were not like the one I had in my 1966 Chevy II Nova Hardtop. Steel with a little pad on the top, or the one in my friend's 1961 Olds Dynamic 88. That dash was soo cool. Would be really cool to fit one of those into the coach for the 1950's retro space rocket look!

The older plastic dashboards here seem to turn to dust if they are not covered. later 70's seem to have been padded more, like the horse collar.

Yah--the truck guys really were in the dark ages compared to the car side of the business. Thank God Alex borrowed a lot of car stuff !!
