Heres my delima on "toading" or towing 4 wheels down?
Im sure my gmc can tow my Carson toyhauler its only 3600 lbs gvwr.Only i was thinking of towing my truck instead this summer.the truck is 6600 pounds and the gmc is 12500.do you all think the gmc would be able to toad um i mean tow a dodge ram 1500?
The reason i bought the gmc is so i dident halv to tow anything actually.i could just hang my burgman 400 scooter on a carrier and go happly on my way.but when take the 12500 lbs vers the 6600lbs it seems like it might do it.the gmc tho is a great tow rig eitherway.
So with either a coupler or right system would i be able to tow my truck along?i could put it on a trailer so i wouldent have to dosconnect the drivshaft.but its nice to have the space of the trailer and have more elbow room in the gmc.

Don,
You need to understand what ratio gear is in the coach.
If you have a standard ratio, your not going to have much success.
I pull Graces Silhuett with all the show parts that scale out to 6,000.
You need to address the brakes also. I feel that the one by US Gear
set up is the simplist unit.

Hmn well thanks for the towing tips id hate to upgrade it mech right now.if i only took the necc of life i might have enough space.but you would think i could tow a toyhauler with approx weight of 3600 lbs without any special mods on the gmc?but perhaps just using a carrier and hang it on the hitch would do.the scooter is only 400lbs.not that heavy like a harly or anything.i just noticed i have a 3.07 final drive.
Thanks

Don,
I've towed a 3000+# S-10 and routinely tow a 3500+# CRV behind my 23'. Even
though it's always had a 3.50:1 or 3.55:1 drive ratio, and a strong engine,
and both toads have auxiliary braking, those are heavier loads than I like.
I wouldn't even consider towing 4000#, much less 6000#. And your
suggestion to put the truck on a trailer is even less appealing -- what
would that trailer weigh, another 2500#? No way.

If you really need to tow your truck, buy a couple spare trannys to rotate though periodically. My opinion is that the TH425 is pretty much at it's design limit in the GMC without towing anything. Asking more of it (especially in heat and mountain driving) is asking for more transmission maintenance and repair. Again, this is my gut feel, just from the number of folks who have had trans work done - I am not a tow-er.
I would ask Manny our transmission guy if there are more transmissions replaced from coaches that towed or not.
I would think FWD is a less desireable setup than RWD for towing.

Stop and think about it a bit. The power train in your GMC came from a 4000 pound Toronado. Now it is being asked to pull a 12,000 pound motor home, 3 times the weight of the vehicle it was originally used in.

Walt Taylor tows his race car trailer behind his GMC, and that weighs
nearly as much as the coach. So, it can be done. But the drivetrain
really needs to be optimized for towing. As I recall, Walt uses the
stock final drive, but he lives in Austin, Texas and much of his
towing is not in the mountains (though the hills around Austin can
still be challenging). He has also replaced his transmission at fairly
regular intervals, and it goes without saying that he is an excellent
mechanic.
