Hi
Called today looking for a 'spare' front wheel bearing and got a selection
of manfacturers , but the same basic number.
What should I be paying for:
Timken 23
Bower Set 23
SKF BR 23
All three have widely ranging prices..any idea why?
Opinions appreciated...thanks.

Timkens are the ones to get. I have them. a lot of folks here have them. They are also not made in China, but France, I believe.

Most of the GMC suppliers are charging $110 with both seals or $80-90 w/o seals.
We have 50 in stock, all timkens

Mike,
I would not use any bearings other than the Timken Set 23. I received an
email from another GMC owner who used Japanese bearings that failed 3000
miles after replacement and it ruined the hubs and knuckles!
As I understand it you also need to check the spacer and make sure it is
marked 0.0095 which is the correct clearance for a GMC.

If you ask that person if he checked the clearance after it was
pressed onto the hub, his answer would be ,"how do you check it?" He
also did not use a hub that has been checked for correct diameter.
Roland Wilber of Oregon was a very sharp technician. He used only
Bower bearings which until last several years were the only bearing
distributed by the automotive jobbers.
Same bearings used on all the Japanese cars that Americans think is so
great. I would never buy one until there are no American car made.
Cars assembled here using parts from Japan, China, and Korea are not
American.
We use Timkin bearings in our shop and sell them because we can get
better prices overall than the Bower bearings.
We have had several Timkin go out in our final drives.
Our guys thought I was full of it when I made them check clearance on
every front bearing.
About every other month they come in and want me to see a clearance
that has no clearance once it was pressed on the hub. Also when they
had excess clearance.
Dave L. knows all the measurements before he assembles it the way he
does. Anyone else not using his parts will stand a chance of running
into problems.
Ken Thoma was another person that knew how to assemble the front
bearing assembly.
