somewhere i read that you should have it connected to a battery; never run it without. a friend uses his all the time without a battery.

You read wrong.
Your friend is right.
The whole reason for the buzz is the ferro-resonant system that locks the output voltage to the line frequency (that does not change much at all) instead of the line voltage (anybody's bet what that is at any moment).
If it still works or can be repaired, they make great bench supplies.
