The back plastic cracked on my 3G so I ordered a replacement on ebay. It finally came after clearing customs and I tryed to replace it. The back is the whole 'chasis' to which all the other parts attach so I had to take it completely apart. I got it stripped and it then apears that the back plastic is different in the zip code of the camera and headhpone jack, so I put mine all back together with the broken old back. Embarasingly I have left over 2 grain of salt size screws, one plastic lever that looks like a tiny GMC relay arm and silver metal spring tab that mounts under a screw. It all works but the camera now as that conncector is on the reverse side of the board and a real pain. I can find a 'how to' on youtube, but none of them have enough detail. Has anyone found an exploded parts view in say PDF format so I can see where these parts go? Anyone else gone down this road? I used a lighted magnifier the whole time and had a stiff neck after the last try. I'm glad I'm not a watch maker. I think the spring tab grounds the board to the side metal ring but I don't know what screw it goes under. Also as you take it apart, the tiny screws which at first all look the same as they are so small, are several different types.

I've taken apart many laptops. As they continue to get smaller and smaller,
the worse it gets, as far as doing service is concerned. I must say, you
have guts.
Have you tried one of these two websites?
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Device/iPhone_3G
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/manual.php?id=10
Both are pretty good. However, none are as fine as the take apart guides
produced by Apple for it's service providers.
Recall the story of the guy that charged 25 cents for the part and 25,000
dollars because he knew where to put the part?
