G’day,

I just spotted a new HEI distributor on eBay for $49.50! See item
370320476018.

I have never dealt with this seller nor have I any idea as to the quality of
this distributor.

There is a phone number listed so you could call the seller.

Rob,
That distributor looks a lot like the one Mark bought and found was junk,
hopefully he will chip in here with an answer as I have been wondering what
the outcome was with him trying to return his.

Peter,

Don't think Mark will mind if I fill you in; he can correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree with you vis-ŕ-vis the distributor manufacturer.

Marks distributor came from a seller called auctionsquad here in Australia
currently selling one under item 200425877030.

He told me that when he pulled the bad one out it had a bent shaft. He
reported it to the vendor and they sent him a new one FOC.

The replacement was installed and was working fine when I spoke to him last
week after he drove the GMC from The Gold Coast to Canberra for Summer Nats.

From what I have found from asking questions and searching online, many of
these low cost NEW HEI distributors are made in China and the electronics
are not interchangeable with the OEM parts. To make things worse, the
electronic component reliability is typical for China, not very good.

There are a few low cost aftermarket HEI units that will accept OEM
electronics. These units are worth considering but be sure to ask the seller
first if the Factory GM components will interchange.

I re-searched these distributors a while back because I was considering
replacing my points set-up with HEI. I finally decided that keeping my
points type distributor and adding a pertronix unit was the better way to go
for me. I also added a set of HEI wires, an MSD HEI conversion cap, and a
high output coil. I can always swap back to a set of points should the
pertronix module fail while on the road. Less spare parts to carry, easier
to diagnose & repair.

Save your money Les. Just convert your old dist with a Pertronix
unit. All solid state. Skip the high output coil too. They don't
put out more than what's required to jump the gap so a good stocker
works as well as a high dollar one.

Steve,
I totally agree regarding the Pertronix unit. I bought 3 of the 1187 units
designed for GM V8s. I'll use one on the 455, modify one for the Onan, and
keep a spare in the parts box.

My stock coil still works, but has a big chip out of the output tower which
is the reason I'm replacing it. I chose an MSD Blaster 8222 "High Vibration"
coil with epoxy potted windings that puts out 45kV. I'll keep my original
coil as a spare.
