Hi all,

I was browsing in my local Harbor Freight store and came across their front bearing tool set for about $65.00. It contained a number of sleeves and adapters with the advertising B/S claiming to being able to re-bearing most cars and light trucks without removing the knuckle. I don't see how it could pull our bearings from the hub.

Has anyone tried this goody?

Gil,

This response is a Scientific Wild Ass Guess!

If it's ITEM 66829-1VGA I can't see how it would work on our bearings. It
appears that it is designed to remove bearings that remain in the knuckle
when you pull the hub. Ours come out with the hub.

Rob,
I think he is talking about ITEM 93980-3VGA. I have an early version of this
puller and I was not able to get it to work on our bearings. I was not able
to
get it under the bearing race. I did not try cutting the old seal out when I
tried
it and the seal may have been what kept it from working. It has been so long
since I tried it I don't really remember what the problem was for sure. I
also
had a Warner tool so I may have given up a little too soon.

Charles,

I looked at that one but choose the 66829-1VGA because of the following text
in the ad:

"Change front wheel bearings without the hassle of removing steering knuckle
or strut assembly."

Considering how clever GMC owners are I would be surprised if you could find
a tool commercially available that would do the job. Why would Tom Warner,
Ken Thoma and others bothered to design and make a special tool!

Rob,
While the creativity of Tom and Ken is not to be denied, the rest of the world is catching up to things like our GMC. With all the front wheel drive vehicles on the road and the crop of all-wheel-drives, someone is probably going to end up with a design very close to what we have. (Kind of the engineering equivalent of and infinite number of monkeys and typewriters thing.)

To Wit: If someone happens to build enough of something for the Chinese to make a tool that will service it, that would be great. We just have to keep the watch for such a thing. It also has to work better than 93645-0VGA does. (The handle broke and no lug nuts were loose.) If you find something that might work, get one to try but SAVE the RECEIPT! Use the web to report the results and everybody here will appreciate not having to try it out on his own.

Matt,

I thought for a minute that the 93645-0VGA was a bearing tool of some kind
and couldn't figure out what "no lug nuts were loose" had to do with it.

I just checked and see that the 93645-0VGA is a torque multiplier. DUH!
