Huh, interesting idea. So here's a sorta related question: I've been ogling a '77 with
fuel injection. However, aside from the annoyance of the smog checks, is it even possible
to register such a thing in California without reverting back to a carburetor?? (or
falsifying the title and thus potentially going to jail...)

Karen,
Before you can register one in CA, you need to pass smog.

True. A '77 will need to be smogged. But I don't believe that FI would automatically cause it to fail. An official Referee would need to be consulted as to whether FI violates CA smog requirements. Check out this link.

I confess, not definative, but it is promising.
If you could convince the owner to make the sale contingent on passing california smog somehow...

It will fail the visual....if the technician looks. For a good brief
on what is required for getting an EFI GMC to pass smog, Frank Condos
can pretty much outline the grief.
