Kathy and I are tentatively planning a trip to Corpus Christi in mid to late January and We are looking for suggestions on camping locations. We are pretty much set up for dry camping and have a kind of low budget mindset (okay, we're CHEAP) so we wouldn't mind camping on the beach (free) or at a national seashore campground.

I am a bit concerned about the beach camping, not knowing how well packed the sand road is, I do drive in dirt quite a bit, going to the sand dunes, etc, but that is normally nice and dry and even so, traction can be iffy. We do have the 4WD Tracker to pull/push if needed, but would rather not have to do that.

Any suggestions or experiences to share?

Thanks

Explore Port Aransas area. Much more pleasant than Corpus. You can branch
out from there. Sand is hard as asphalt. Watch the tide. Don't miss the
Lady Lex.

Padre Island national Seashore has a campground by the shore. If you are former military check to see if you qualify to use camping facilities at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. I am sure there are a number of other camp grounds in the area.

I live in Corpus and can say the beach varies a lot. Always want to check it before driving on it. Seen it hard as asphalt and soft as flour. Also have room to park at the house if needed. Done a lot of beach camping. Winter here doesn't suck. National seashore is good as well as mustang island state park. I believe camping is still free on the laguna side of the seashore(Bird island) with a 14 day limit.

CRS kicks in. Forgot about the passes. Park, bird island and then they added a camping fee. Passes were about 50 annually for park and bird island and camp fee was I think 8 at bird island, more at the beach. Watch the weather carefully in the winter. "Northers" are not a joke. First night camping in the GMC was at bird island in February I think. All calm until 75 mph storm hit at midnight. The back window will bulge almost an inch without breaking, I know this now. Spent the entire next day at the coin car wash- so much salt spray that it sparkled in the sun.

Hi Carl. I’m with Billy on the port Aransas recommendation. But I don’t know what they offer for free dry camping. But about 15 miles south of Corpus is the Padre island National seashore area. They have numerous dry-camping areas. A yearly pass is $45. Then they tack on a nightly fee on top of that. Either $8 to $15. They don’t accept reservations, it is first come first serve. https://www.nps.gov/pais/planyourvisit/camping.htm

We DO have the Golden Age lifetime pass. Do they accept that there? Being a NPS site, I would think they would.

We are not averse to paying for camping at the state park or national park type campground, but would rather not spend $50.00/night for a place to park and sleep.

Thanks for all the great info, guys. We'll continue to do some planning based on a lot of that advice.

I'll let you know if I need more guidance later.
